YANCEY COUNTY, NC - MILITARY - Application for CW Pension, James Henry Edney ----¤¤¤¤---- Background: James Henry Edney (born about 1845 Cane River, Yancey County - died 11 March 1932 Paint Gap, Yancey County) was the son of Calvin J. Edney of Henderson County and Lucinda Wilson of Yancey County. Soldier's Application For Pension. State of North Carolina, County of Yancey. On this 25th day of June A.D. 1901, personally appeared before me, Claud Davis, J.P., ..James Edney, age 55 years, and a resident of Paint Gapp post office.. makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension under the provisisions of an act.. for the relief of certain Confederate Soldiers and Widows. That he is the identical James Edney who enlisted in Company A, 25th Reg. N.C. State Troops in the Spring 1862 to serve in the armies of the Late Confederate States, and that while in said service at Seven Pines Battle in the state of Virginia he received a wound or wounds. Applicant is on the B Class Roll. Was wounded in head at Seven Pines in Va; a large gash affected his eyes and spine and left side of head just on edge of hair. Says he is affected in left side with Reheumatism and talking. I ain't able to do no more than 1/4 labor. All the above caused by the war. I never deserted my post. {signed} James (x) Edney. Sworn and subscribed before me this 25th day of June 1901, Claude Davis, J.P. Also personally appeared before me G.N. Edney and James Anders, who reside at Mars Hill and Barnardsville... a person whom I know to be respectable and entitled to credit, and being by me duly sworn, says he is acquainted with James Edney, the applicant for pension, and has every reason to believe that he is the identical person he represents himself to be, and that the facts set forth in this affidavit are correct to the best of his knowledge... {signed} G.N. Edney, James Anders. Also personally appeared before me Dr. J.H. Baird a physician in good standing.. and thoroughly examined James Edney, the applicant, and finds such disability for manual labor as is described below, by reason of wounds received while in the discharge of his duty as a soldier of North Carolina in the service of the late Confederate States." Dr. Baird's statement: "James Edney has had wounds in left side of head near hairline. His eyes are badly affected, he is quite deaf, his spine and neck is badly affected, his kidneys are affected, he has rheumatism, he is not able to perform more than 1/4 of the labor of a sound man of his age." On 1 July 1901 the pension board recommended approval and forwarded to the State Pension Board at Raleigh, upon which it was approved. Members of the Yancey County Pension Board were former Confederate Captain, David Michael. Ray, D.A. Angel, Will M. Anglin, and Sam Bennett.
