Richard Franks is my 5th great grandfather. transcribed by Evelyn Carroll August 5, 2006 _______________________________________________________________ State of Tennessee January Term, 1835 Washington County First Judicial Court Be it remembered that on this 3rd Monday of January, 1835 Before the Court of Pleas for said County formally appeared Richard Barrot, a citizen of Yancy County, State of North Carolina but who resides near the state line, most convenient to Jonesborough, Tennessee is the test of Justice of Washington County of being desirous of availing himself of the provisions of the act of the 7th day of June 1831. Made [illegible] the following declaration to court that he served in the Revolutionary war under the following named officers and at the truely [illegible] stated terms That being born in the County of Loudin, State of Virginia, 4th of March, 1754 according to the tradition of his ancestors, and his father after his birth having removed to Pittsylvania [county, of that] state, where he was principally raised. That in the spring of the year 1776 (Thinks in the month of May) in the County and state last aforesaid entered into the service of the Country in the Line of that State under Capt. Thomas Dillard for the term of two years. Number of the Regiment not now recollected but was that in which said Thomas Dillard acted as Captain and Tiler Purkins [sic] was Col. that after his enlistment as aforesaid, he was marched to a teocart operite [teacart operation?] [graveyard?] on Island Kusin by stone permit, James Town where he with the Company of Deltrand guarded against the Negrose running to and joining Dummine under his headmaster after which service on the Departure of Daumane he with Dillans Company was marched to the Western borders of Virginia to repel the hostile [illegible] of the Cherokee Indians who had assembled in great bodies in the borders and at the Long Island's new Tennessee. I was with the company that under the command of Col. Chrisly at the Long Island flats & there remained a considerable time & marched to the Cherokee Nation under Capt. Herd and Leiuteniant Chacee, after Capt. Dillard had resigned (owning to sickness) & had gone home that in the expedition against the Cherokees in which he was Shelly Chrisly had the Command in which service he continued the remainder of 1776 (after leaving the Jamestown Service) and 1777. And when he had fulfilled his two years service & was discharged service by Captain Herd & returned home to Pittsylvania [Co] at this lapse of time he has no distinct recollection as to the obtainment of a discharge but of attached has tested. He states that in addition to the Two years which he served close service in the years 1776*7 as before stated, he served two terms of three Months each in the Militia of Virginia, one term as a substitute for JOHN BARROT, who hired him as a substitute in 1778 to perform said term & did serve under Col. Christy in said expedition of three months to the Cherokee Nation & was discharged at the expiration of his time verbally & returned home by the officer under whom he then served or his immediate Captain he has forgotten. The other term was in 1782, to go to York Town when Cornwallis was on his march thro Virginia to that place. He Volunteered for three months & served until the Surrender of Cornwallis & was marched into North Carolina to Salisbury to intercept him on his March to Virginia & [illegible] to meet with his army [???] issued back a differential [sortie?] & made for the place of Artean but was discharged oweing to the news of the surrender reaching them, That he is now aged Eighty-one years of age & made application to court & has his hopes benefited to dec'd on for pension in 1832 but even as he has understood miscarried by mail & residing as he does in the mountains dividing North Carolina from Tennessee & distant from the seats of Justice he had not received information there until recently & hereby release his every claim whatever to the pension except the present & declaring that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state, and he hereby declares that after the [illegible] search & inquiry he is unable to ascertain that any [person] is living by where he can establish his services in whole or part but that of Benjamin Dillard where a testimony is attached and who resides in Washington County Tennessee & in the cause in trail [cost & trial?] of attending at said place to make out his claim. That he has set sum [illegible] of his up but this transaction he has given he believes to be true. Sworn to and Subscribed in aforesaid this day & year just before written.
