J. HORTON SHOT BY HIS COUSIN, WOODFIN HORTON - The Tragedy Occurred Near Paint Gap Last Saturday, and Was Caused by an Old Trouble. News reached the city yesterday of the killing of E. J. Horton, better known as "Dud" Horton, by his first cousin, Woodfin Horton, in a blacksmith shop near Paint Gap last Saturday. As the story reached here, it seems that some years ago Woodfin and "Dud" Horton had a fight about a scythe, during which "Dud" chewed a part of Woodfin's ear off and was made to pay about $75 for the assault. A grudge has existed since, it is stated, and when the men met Saturday, "Dud" remarked to Woodfin, "It cost me $75 to whip you once, and I think you ought to pay me part of that money back." Woodfin's reply was to pull out his pistol and begin firing. The first three shots wounded "Dud, " who, it is alleged, was unarmed, about the arms, but the fourth pierced his heart and he fell dead. Woodfin then gave himself up to the sheriff. E. J. or "Dud", the dead man, was a brother of "Low" Horton, who is a partner of N. A. Collins, the East street meat dealer, and is the second of four brothers to die with his boots on. The eldest of the brothers was killed by Anderson in the mines at Bakersville some years ago. "Dud" Horton was the youngest of the four. "Low" Horton left the city yesterday on horseback for the scene of Saturday's tragedy.
