He was the son of the late Robert Taylor, formerly of Yancey County, and the late Sallie Kate Deyton, formerly of Mitchell County. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge No. 626. He served on the board of directors of the Cannon Memorial YMCA for 30 years and was also a member of the Kannapolis Volunteer Fire Department and chief for 17 years. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was retired from Cannon Mills Co. and a life member of American Legion Post 115. He was past chairman of Rowan County Parks and Recreation Commission, serving 13 years and was a member of the advisory board for the N.C. Department of Labor Safety and former chairman of the Democrat precinct. Survivors include his wife, Nell (Peggy) Reading Deyton; son, Tony Deyton; daughter, Louann D. Shive; two brothers, Arleigh Deyton of Charlotte and John Deyton of Atlanta, GA; a sister, Ruth Covington of Richmond, VA; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Revs. Don Shuman and Pat Purdy officiated. Mason rites were provided by Cannon Masonic Lodge. Burial followed in Carolina Memorial Park. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. at Whitley’s Funeral Home.
