A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late S.D. McKinney Sr. and Florence Hall McKinney, and wife of the late Woodrow Howell. She and her husband owned and operated Howell’s store in Newdale for 30 years. She was a lifetime member of Martins Chapel Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Ronald Howell of Newdale, and Ben Howell of Winston Salem; a sister, Wilma Cornwell of Spruce Pine; two brothers, Charles McKinney of Raleigh, and Bill McKinney of Newdale; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Rev. Rhett Williams-Brown officiated. Burial was in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
