Newspaper obituary
Martha Elvira Horton Penland: Died at her home on Horton Creek, Yancey County, 
on the 5th day of Sept. 1896, wife of M. L. Penland, aged 76 years, 11 months 
and 19 days.  Death has visited our home and claimed for its victim an aged 
mother, who head had silvered over the frosts of many years but one whose 
christian virtues still live and will continue to live as long as time shall 
continue to roll its ages on.  The country all around new her and none knew 
her but to love her. She joined the Methodist church at the age of 14 years 
and lived a consistent member until death. She was a sufferer for three years, 
but bore her suffering with the sublimest patience and cheerfulness.  How 
sweet death comes to a child of God, when the love of the Lord and a virtuous 
life have paved the road to brighter realms above; how happy it will be for 
us, if we can, like Grandma, on our death beds "read our titles clear to 
mansions in the sky."
