W. PROFFITT of the County of Yancey and State of North Carolina being in my right mind do on this 6th day of April 1898 make this my last will and testament. Namely that when I leave this world that my body shall be decently but not expensively buried then that whatever is owing to me shall be collected and should there be anything owing to anyone by me that it be paid and if my wife MENERVA J. PROFFITT is living it is my will that one thousand dollars shall be loaned on good security and the interest on the same be paid in advance annually to my wife MENERVA J. PROFFITT for her support and if from any cause the interest shall fail to support her comfortably then she may take of the principal a sufficient amount to support her comfortably while she lives. The above named one thousand dollars to be loaned in sums not exceeding two hundred dollars to any one person. I also will that the balance of my estate if there is any shall be equally divided between my five children viz; SALLY PARKER, MARGARET S. HOLCOMBE, ALTHA A. HAMPTON, GEORGE A. PROFFITT and DAVID RILEY PROFFITT and after the death of their mother whatever is left of the one thousand dollars set apart for her use shall be equally divided between the above five heirs.
