She married ROBERT CAROTHERS on 17 June 1858 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, son of ROBERT CAROTHERS and SARAH SHAW. Emiline grew up near Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, where her family had joined the Presbyterian ministry in the western frontier. She and her husband had six children. Her husband, a minister and president of the College of the Blind in Vinton, Iowa, died leaving Emiline a widow at the age of forty-seven years. Emiline then returned to Pennsylvania for a short time before leaving by rail for Dakota Territoty with her five children between the ages of twenty-five and ten years. She was charactarized as a woman of great physical and moral strength. The family live in a sod home before moving into a traditional house. He children served teh community both in civic and church affairs. Emiline Ellen MIlligan Carothers died on 17 April 1928 at the age of 93 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
