Smith, widow of David Smith and mother of six living children viz: Mrs. A.B. House, and Mrs. M.A. Breen of Towner, Mrs. E.L. Conklin of Seattle, Abe and George Smith of Towner and Charles of Williston. One daughter, Mrs. H.F. Francis died at Detroit, Wisconsin, and one son, Hiram died at Spokane, Wash. Mrs. Smith was born at Port Dover, Ont. Feb. 21, 1830. Her maiden name was Slingerland. She was married to David Smith in 1846 at Victoria Canada. In 1876 removed to Dakota to the Red River valley for 9 years, then came to Towner in 1887, from where she entered into rest. Mrs. Smith was a woman of modest demeanor and a very retiring manner, but with a heart rich in sympathy for all sufferers and a natural peacemaker. She was never known to utter a harsh or unkindly word. The funeral took place at 2 o'clock Wednesday. Rev. John McLean officiating. The vocal quartette consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kermott, Mrs. Olson and Mr. Fred Haines, Miss Abrahamson, organist. The hymns were beautifully rendered. The casket was covered with flowers, the loving tribute of relatives and friends. The remains were interred in the Towner cemetery.
