March 22, 1918 BIG RED CROSS DAY AT ROCK LAKE FRIDAY, MARCH 15 Total Receipts $2000 The never-failing return of old "Sol" Friday ushered in a day which will long be remembered as a red letter day in the annals of our little village. The weather excepting for a little too much wind was ideal. At an early hour "old glory" was unfurled to the breeze while patriotic colors were displayed from many windows. By noon a goodly crowd had assembled to witness and participate in the Red Cross auction sale which opened at 1:30 with the able Frank Robeson as crier. Bidding went rapidly and high almost every conceivable kind of article was produced for sale attesting to the originality and spontaneous cooperation of our entire community. As a brief example of the splendid spirit shown during the same, we cite that of the American flag donated by our Rebekahs which after a lightning bidding was bestowed upon the successful bidder for $100. A Red Cross quilt brought $70. A patriotic picture $25. A hand-carved cane embellished with the national colors sold for $17, etc. While there larger sales were fine the beautiful spirit of the entire sale predominated in that each one gave so heartily and yet so unostentatiously. A splendid addition was made when a subscription was circulated wherein the following donated the proceeds from one acre of this year's crop to be given to the Red Cross funds, which with an average yield should about double the amount already made by the same. March 29, 1918 NOTICE TO PARENTS AND GUARDIANS The state's attorney and county superintendent of schools wish to call the attention of parents and guardians of Towner County the very important subject of the school attendance of children of the compulsory school age. There is no question that many parents will be compelled to keep children of the compulsory age out of school during the coming seeding season. When this is necessary the procedure to follow is for parents or guardians to consult the county superintendent and then apply to the states attorney for a permit; as the new law provides that this particular excuse "actually necessary to the support of the family" must be passed upon by this officer. If the permission of the state's attorney is secured he will give a permit in writing naming the children and their age and the length of time for which they are excused. The county superintendent and the state's attorney wish to exercise the utmost care in safeguarding best interests of the rights of the school children of this county and despite the great need for their help on farms, there will be no wholesale granting of permission to leave school. Only those will be permitted to leave school who are actually NEEDED to work in the fields and who are old enough for this work. W. T.
