January 5, 1922 Hansboro News Miss Matilda Anderson has been visiting at the home of her brother, O. R. Anderson. Mr. Krom of Sarles was a caller in town the first of the week. Mrs. A. C. Anderson went to Devils Lake on Friday and returned on Saturday. Dr. Emert has been making several professional trips to Hansboro these last two weeks. Mrs. Fletcher, who has been teaching across the line for a few months, returned to Cheyenne, Wyoming on Thursday. J. D. Leftwich went to Devils Lake on Friday and returned on Saturday. Mrs. Alice Bower, of Picton, visited her daughters, Mrs. E. L. Clatterbuck and Mrs. H. Richardson during Christmas. Mr. and Mrs. F. Walker and their daughter of Devils Lake, who have been visiting in Hansboro and vicinity the past week, returned home on Saturday. Miss Lida Antilla went to Elsberry Saturday to spend a few days with her sister. Katherine O’Brien of Rock Lake came up to Hansboro on Thursday to visit Vivian Gieb. A number of young folks from town went to A. C. Anderson’s on Tuesday evening and gave Mrs. Bud Stapleton a surprise shower. She received many nice and useful presents. January 12, 1922 Hansboro News Miss Aletha Weeden, who has been spending the holidays at home returned to her school at Devils Lake on Tuesday. Mr. Geo. Olson went to the twin cities on Tuesday and returned on Saturday. Rev. Major of Starkweather, Rev. Hutcheson of Grand Forks and Rev. Smith of Rock Lake came up and took part in the community program Wednesday afternoon and evening. Born to Mr. and Mrs. H. Richardson on Wednesday, Jan. 4, a son. Mrs. F. Murdick left for Bismarck on Friday to visit her daughter Mrs. L. P. McAneney. Misses Nellie and Alberta Weeden went to Rock Lake Tuesday and returned on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Olson of Rock Lake came up to Hansboro Wednesday and spent a few days with friends and relatives. Miss Grace Tribble, who is teaching at Perth, visited at the E. Disher home the latter part of the week. Mr. D. D. Finley made a business trip to Devils Lake on Saturday. Leighton Joiner of the Farmers Telephone Company was a caller in town on Thursday. Mr. C. Hawkins returned from Edmore on Tuesday where she spent the Christmas holidays. Mr. D. A. Blackburn on Cando was a business caller in town on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. W. Glassford were callers at the H. Richardson home on Sunday afternoon. Miss Lois Trent returned home from Bottineau, N. D. on Saturday where she spent a few days visiting friends and relatives. Miss Alberta Weeden returned to her school at Crocus, N. D. on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ninke went to Egeland on Saturday to visit their daughter returning on Monday. Mr. Tingum returned from Lairmore on Saturday after two weeks vacation with relatives and friends. Miss Helen Peterson returned from Bisbee on Saturday having spent the holidays at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Peterson. Mrs. Alice Bowers of Picton is visiting her daughter Mrs. H. Richardson. January 19, 1922 Hansboro News Mr. E. T. Judd of Cando was a business caller in town on Wednesday. Mr. J. R. Wills made a business trip to Devils Lake on Thursday returning on Friday. Chas. King went to Fargo Tuesday and returned on Saturday. Mr. Hoff, father of Geo. Hoff of Picton, died at the hospital at Devils Lake on Saturday. Mrs. Pound and Mrs. Dillon who were on the sick list the fore part of the week are reported much improved. January 26, 1921 Hansboro News Mrs. F. H. Murdick returned from Bismarck on Monday where she has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. L. P. McAneney. Rev. Smith of Rock Lake came up Tuesday to conduct the funeral of Mr. Hoff, at the church on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. B. L. Thomas went to Cando on Monday. Mrs. James O’Donnell went to Devils Lake on Tuesday and returned on Thursday. Mr. John Pond went to Canada on Tuesday where he will visit for some time. The Rock Lake basketball boys played the Hansboro team here on Friday evening. The score was 14 to 10 in favor of Hansboro. Mrs. John Walker and little son visited at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Disher on Sunday. Art Robinson who has been visiting at St. John for some time returned to Hansboro the latter part of the week. February 2, 1922 Hansboro News Mr. G. A. Olson went to Devils Lake on Tuesday and returned Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Otto Bullock went down the line on Wednesday. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lymburn on Thursday a baby boy. Dr. Emeret was a professional caller in town on Wednesday and Thursday. Messers Alex Eckerdt, O. Carter and N. McLean went to Devils Lake on Thursday. Joe Walgomot made a business trip to Rock Lake on Friday. Mr. H. E. Grimm of the Standard Oil Co., went to Devils Lake on Saturday. A number of members of the local I. O. O. F. went to Devils Lake on Friday to attend lodge, returning Saturday noon. The Sarles basketball girls and boys played the local teams on the home floor Saturday evening. The score of the boys being 22 to 2 in favor of Hansboro, the score of the girls 3 to 0 in favor of Hansboro. Miss Gladys Blackburn spent the weekend in Hansboro visiting friends. The local station of the Standard Oil Co., has been undergoing some changes and repairs under the supervision of H. E. Grimm of Devils Lake. James O’Donnell went to Devils Lake on Saturday to receive medical treatment. Everett Lawler autoed to Cando on Saturday. Mrs. Buck of Starkweather, N. D., lectured on temperance at the church Sunday evening. February 9, 1922 Hansboro News Mrs. Johnson, formerly Roxy Underwood, left for her home in So. Dak. on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Clair Wills and son of Grand Forks are visiting with friends and relatives in this vicinity. Mr. John R. Walker went to Park River, N. D., last week and returned on Monday accompanied by his father, Mr. Geo. Walker of that place. Mrs. Underwood and two sons left for S. Dak. on Monday to visit her daughter. Miss Hazel Lawrence spent the weekend with home folks. Mr. J. R. Wills was a passenger to Devils Lake Thursday and returned Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Geary and son of Perth visited in town a few days last week. Mrs. E. L. Clatterbuck spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Alice Bower of Picton. Mrs. C. E. Mr. George McLean of Sarles visited his son, G. H. McLean on Saturday. February 16, 1922 Hansboro News Mrs. Jas. O’Donnell went to Devils Lake on Monday. Mr. George Walker of Park River who has been visiting at the home of his son, John Walker, returned to his home on Tuesday. The Post Office has been moved to the building west of the Bank of Hansboro. Miss Alberta Weeden of Crocus is visiting at the home of her parents for a few days. Mr. H. Lymburn went to Park River the first of the week. Mr. E. Erickson, state school inspector, spent Thursday in town. The Hansboro basketball team played the Rock Lake team at Rock Lake on Friday evening, the score being 42 to 22 in favor of Rock Lake. Melvin and Amy Olson and Ethel Poyzer went to Rock Lake on Friday to attend the ball game. Mr. A. P. Larson of Bisbee was a caller in town on Wednesday. Mrs. Lynch Leftwich left on Saturday for Carpio, N. Dak., where she will visit friends and relatives. February 23, 1922 Hansboro News Dr. Balfour of Rock Lake was up between trains on Monday. Mrs. Max Bower and daughter returned home from Wisconsin on Saturday where she has been visiting friends and relatives for the past two months. Miss Mildred Elsberry of Rock Lake spent Sunday with Miss Nellie Weeden. Mr. B. L. Thomas went to Devils Lake on Monday returning Tuesday. A number of young people went out to Mr. J. Pounds’ for choir practice Thursday evening. The members of the W. C. T. U. met with Mrs. C. E. Blackorby on Thursday afternoon. Mr. Hugh Lymburn returned from Park River on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Olson and daughter Ruth went to Rock Lake on Saturday to visit their son, Alfred and wife. They returned home on Monday. Miss Gladys Blackburn was a caller between trains on Saturday. Miss Alberta Weeden left for Crocus on Saturday after a short visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Weeden. Charlie King went to Elsberry Saturday. Mr. P. Jorgenson, representing the International Harvester Co., was in town between trains on Friday. Mr. C. E. Blackorby made a business trip to St. Paul on Saturday. Messrs. Ralph Olson and O. D. Tingum went to Sarles on Saturday and returned on Sunday. March 2, 1922 Hansboro News Wednesday, being a holiday, there was no school. Mr. D. D. Finley made a business trip to Starkweather on Tuesday returning Thursday. Miss Marie O’Donnell of Picton spent a few days with Miss Laura Kellogg the first of the week. Miss Marie Olson of Cando is visiting her sister Mrs. B. L. Thomas. The High School gave a literary program in the hall Wednesday evening. Church services were held in the school house Thursday evening. Mr. Nutting of Minneapolis was a business caller in our city several days the first of the week. Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Ward drove to Rolla on Saturday. Mrs. Dzumbar and her two children of Wisconsin arrived here one day last week and are visiting at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Agarand. Mr. C. E. Blackorby returned from a business trip to the twin cities on Friday. Mrs. H. Richardson and baby went to Picton on Friday to visit her mother, Mrs. Alice Bower. March 9, 1922 Mrs. Gleeson Dies at Devils Lake Hospital Well Known Young Cando Woman Passes Away in Hospital Saturday Morning On Saturday morning the entire community was shocked by the sad news received from the General Hospital in Devils Lake that Mrs. Ben Gleeson, nee Clara Pederson, passed away there at 1:15 o’clock that morning. Mrs. Gleeson was first taken ill over two weeks ago. She was taken to the General Hospital in Devils Lake by Dr. McDonald, where it was found necessary to perform an operation. This was done, but as we understand it, she never fully rallied. Everything that could be done to strengthen her was resorted to, including two transfusions of blood. But serious complications set in and at 1:15 o’clock a.m. Saturday she passed away. The direct cause of her death is reported to be acute appendicitis with complications. Clara Pederson was born in Randal, Minn., Sept. 27, 1897, being 24 years old last September. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church when fourteen years old. She was married to Ben Gleeson on her birthday, September 27, 1913. She has always lived an honest upright christian life and her cheerful lovable disposition shall always be missed by those who knew her. The remains were taken home to Cando Monday where a host of mourning friends viewed the body at the Gleeson home until it was removed to the Methodist Church. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Roe, assisted by Rev. Geo. B. Denison. A beautiful duet was sung by Misses Murdoch and Thom. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery east of this city. Among those of her relatives who were present at the funeral was her father, Mr. Thomas Pederson of Mildred, Minn., her sister, Mrs. Whiting of Thief River Falls, Minn.’ Mrs. Betsy Rollofson, an aunt; Misses Emma and Ida Folkedal, cousins and Albert and Joe Munson, also cousins. There were also a number of Mr. Gleeson’s relatives present. Our sincerest sympathy is extended to the husband, father and other relatives and friends during their time of bereavement. Hansboro News Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Olson of Rock Lake visited in Hansboro on Monday and Tuesday. Mr. J. H. Poyzer and Mr. J. H. Brooks attended the Grain Men’s Convention in Devils Lake on Wednesday and Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Wolgamont returned from Iowa last Thursday after several weeks’ visit among friends and relatives. Mrs. E. Watts spent several days at Rock Lake the fore part of the week visiting her sister, Mrs. Eller. Mrs. B. L. Thomas went to Devils Lake on Friday returning on Saturday. The basketball team went to Starkweather on Friday and played the team at that place, the score being 22 to 5 in favor of Starkweather. Dr. H. F. Emert of Sarles was a professional caller in town on Sunday. Mr. Melvin Olson went to Starkweather on Friday returning on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. J. Hackett visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. Johnstone on Sunday. Mrs. C. E. Blackorby made a business trip to Cando on Thursday. March 16, 1922 Hansboro News Mr. B. L. Thomas and Miss Marie Olson went to Cando Wednesday. Mr. Thomas returned on Friday. Mr. D. Wampler of Egeland was up between trains on Thursday. Mrs. Lynch Leftwich returned from Carpio, N. D. last week where she has been visiting friends and relatives. G. H. McLean and C. Hawkins went to Devils Lake on Friday to take in the basketball tournament. They returned Sunday morning. Mr. L. Joiner was a caller in town on Wednesday. D. D. Finley made a business trip to the twin cities on Friday. March 23, 1922 Hansboro News Born to Mr. and Mrs. M. Griver on Monday, March 13th, a son. Dr. Emert was a professional caller in town Monday. Judge W. L. Converse of So. St. Paul and C. C. Converse of Bismarck arrived in town Monday to visit their sister, Mrs. C. E. Blackorby. Mrs. Sam Epstein of Sarles arrived in town on Monday and will visit at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. Griver for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. E. Dillon and family moved in to the house recently vacated by Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wilson and family the fore part of the week. Mr. W. Converse returned to So. St. Paul on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Geary and son of Perth drove through Hansboro on their way to Canada where Mrs. Geary and son will visit friends and Mr. Geary will return to Perth. Little Marie McLean entertained a number of her friends last Wednesday afternoon, it being her fifth birthday. C. C. Converse returned to Bismarck on Thursday. Alex Epstein of Grand Forks arrived in our city on Saturday and is spending a few days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Griver. Messrs. O. D. Tingum, C. A. Weeden and J. O. Carter attended the Masonic Lodge at Sarles Saturday evening. Mr. G. H. McLean went to Sarles on Saturday and returned Sunday morning. Ralph Lawler had a severe attack of appendicitis on Wednesday evening and was taken to the hospital at Devils Lake on Thursday where an operation was performed early Friday morning. He is reported as getting along nicely. April 6, 1922 Hansboro News C. E. Blackorby, J. D. Leftwich and J. W. F. Johnson returned from Cando on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Clatterbuck left on Monday for Grand Forks where Mrs. Clatterbuck will receive medical treatment. C. A. Weeden was a passenger to Crocus on Wednesday. Edwin Pound returned to Canada on Tuesday after spending several months visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Pound. O. R. Anderson made a business trip to Devils Lake on Wednesday. Mack Pownell returned to Starkweather on Thursday. Mr. B. Jorgenson transacted business in town between trains on Wednesday. Mrs. Bert John returned to Brandon on Tuesday after visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. Lawler, for a few days. Ralph Lawler returned from Devils Lake on Thursday where he underwent an operation for appendicitis. Mrs. O. R. Anderson and Mark returned home from Grand Forks on Tuesday where they have been visiting friends and relatives for the past few weeks. Mrs. Epstein returned to Sarles on Thursday after having been here taking care of her daughter, Mrs. Griver during her illness. Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Olson went to Rock Lake on Thursday. W. H. White, formerly of Picton township, passed away in a hospital at Grand Rapids, Mich., Friday, March 17, from heart trouble. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, four children and several brothers. One of the brothers, Roy D. White, is well known to Rolla inhabitants, being the mail clerk on our local train. The funeral was held Monday, March 20, at Wayland, Mich. Mr. White moved to Wayland from Rolla last fall. He was a member of the local I. O. O. F. lodge and was highly respected by all who knew him. April 13, 1922 Register of Deeds I hereby announce myself as a candidate for re-election to the Office of Register of Deeds, subject to the will of the voters at the June Primaries. W. N. Mrs. Dumphy, who has been visiting friends and relatives here a couple of weeks returned to Devils Lake on Wednesday. Mrs. M. Monson and children left for Leonard, Minn. on Monday where they will visit friends and relatives for a few weeks. Mrs. C. E. Blackorby received the sad news of the death of her mother at Cresco, Iowa on Wednesday and left for that place the same day via Leeds. The Bisbee H. S. baseball team played the Hansboro H. S. team last Wednesday evening, the score being 9 to 2 in favor of Hansboro. Mrs. O. R. Anderson and son Mark went to Devils Lake on Thursday to meet Mark’s little sister who will make her future home with them. They returned Friday. Mr. E. L. Clatterbuck was a passenger down the line on Friday. He was accompanied home on Saturday by Mrs. Clatterbuck who has been at the Grand Forks hospital for some time. Mr. Twite of Grand Forks was a caller in town on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Griver spent Sunday at the Epstein home at Sarles. May 25, 1922 Hansboro News Mr. Ralph Olson went to Grand Forks on Tuesday to attend a meeting of the Shriners. Rev. Smith of Rock Lake and Rev. Major of Starkweather came up on Monday. They held services in the school house in the evening. Mrs. M. Monson and family returned on Tuesday from Leonard, Minn. where they have been visiting friends and relatives the last two or three weeks. C. A. Weeden and C. E. Blackorby were callers in Rugby on Tuesday. Miss Margaret Knight went to Devils Lake on Friday to meet her sister, Ellen, who returned after finishing a term of school at Mapes, N. D. They returned Saturday. Miss Myrtle Weeden went to Rock Lake on Friday to attend the ball game and senior class play. The H. S. baseball team played with the Rock Lake baseball team at Rock Lake on Friday. The score was 12 to 7 in favor of Hansboro. What might have proved a serious accident occurred Thursday night when John White and three members of his threshing crew were returning from Rolla. The car skidded off a grade into the ditch, breaking a front wheel and spring. The threshers were thrown out over the windshield but beyond a shaking up and the pleasure obtained from their long walk home, no one was hurt. A. H. Bower, who was summoned here by the illness of his mother arrived Friday from his home in Grand Forks. October 26, 1922 Picton Mr. and Mrs. Lynch Leftwich who worked the Frank Murdick farm the past year have moved to Hansboro. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Strouse, Wednesday, Oct. 18, a girl. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lentz were Rolla callers Wednesday, Mrs. Lentz having dental work done while there. Leighton Joiner of Cando was up Friday to move the phone from the old school into the new one. Miss Marie O’Donnell is staying with Mrs. Elmer Clatterbuck of Hansboro while attending school there. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Stapleton have moved to the Frank Murdick farm which they will farm the coming year. Mr. and Mrs. August Turcotte and children are now nicely settled on the Travis farm recently vacated by Max Bower. Mr. Jarvis was on the sick list a few days last week. Andrew McMaster autoed to Devils Lake on business Saturday. Mrs. J. Poyzer and children of Hansboro called on friends in this vicinity Sunday. Alice O’Donnell visited with Vera Hoerer Tuesday. The farm home of Andrew McMaster was entirely destroyed by fire on Thursday evening. The fire was discovered by Ernest Dawson, who brought the alarm to the school where Mr. McMaster’s children were attending the program and in a short time about ten carloads of men were at the scene of the fire which had made such headway it was impossible to do anything. Mr. Dawson had saved a few chairs, a couch and the piano before coming to the school, but the piano also caught fire and burned. The program to open the new school was held Thursday evening commencing with a selection by the Hansboro orchestra, which also furnished their usual excellent music for the dance which followed the program. An excellent selection which was much enjoyed by all was given on the bass-cello by Corvin Goodyear of Rock Lake. At the close of the program, Miss Gibbens gave a short talk and presented the diplomas to Misses Freda Thuner and Sylvia Allard, 8th grade graduates of this year. A hot supper was served at six o’clock and lunch at midnight so no one lacked for a chance to eat. The doors of the lower rooms which were filled with exhibits made by the school children and potatoes raised by the club members were also open but a large number missed this, one of the most interesting features there. Much credit is due the teachers and pupils for their work in helping to make this a success and it is hoped by many who did not hear the entire program, that they will consent to repeat it again in a short time. Several more attractions are planned for next time. Elton Fessenden had the fingers on one hand badly crushed when he caught them in the wringer, while his mother was washing Monday. Dr. Verret of Rolla dressed the injured hand and he is now getting along nicely. Hansboro C. E. Blackorby and C. A. Weeden made a business strip to Sarles Friday afternoon. Porter were callers in Devils Lake a few days the latter part of the week. C. E. Blackorby autoed to Armourdale Tuesday evening. Donald Disher, Bert Wilson and Robert Watts autoed to Cando Wednesday afternoon. Miss Alexander and Mrs. Whalen of Cando were in our village Thursday. Miss Alexander is a candidate for County Superintendent of Schools and canvassed the town that afternoon. Rev. W. W. Smith of Rock Lake was up between trains on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Smith and family are leaving Rock Lake and are going to Hope, N. D., where Rev. Smith will be pastor of the M. E. Church. The show given in the hall Thursday evening was very well attended and enjoyed by all. The same troupe will be here again in the near future with a western show. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Olson and son were callers in town for a short time on Thursday. Miss Ellen Knight who is teaching at Perth and Miss Inez Berg drove over from Perth on Friday morning. Miss Berg returned the same day and Ellen spent the weekend with her parents. The Sanford family of Calvin, N. D. have moved into the house formerly occupied by Geo. Wilson’s. J. R. Walker made a business trip to Devils Lake on Saturday. Mrs. Blackburn of Cando visited friends in Hansboro Saturday. Velma Converse visited in Cando the latter part of the week. Miss Alberta Weeden came up from Crocus on Saturday to visit at the home of her parents. She returned on Sunday accompanied by her sisters, Nellie and Myrtle and the Misses Trent and Menzie. C. A. Weeden and Nellie autoed to Devils Lake Friday afternoon. Miss Aletha Weeden, candidate for County Superintendent of Schools, was calling on the Hansboro people Saturday afternoon. Picton Mr. and Mrs. Fred Turcotte and children and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jodoin visited with F. Allard and family Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Lawler and children visited relatives at Rolla Sunday. John White was called to Rolla last Sunday by the serious illness of his father, who grew worse and passed away Thursday night. Mr. White’s many friends extend their sincere sympathy to him in his loss. Grandma Maughan, who has spent the summer visiting friends here, departed Wednesday for her home at Lethbridge, Alta. Miss Hazel Lawrence of Hansboro taught for Mrs. Leftwich who was sick Wednesday. Miss Alice O’Donnell spent the weekend visiting the Allard girls. G. Hikkilla returned Friday from a visit to several points in the northwestern part of Canada. A number of Picton ladies met at the school Friday, and passed the day there sewing and visiting. Fessenden and children, Mrs. F. Ninke and Eleanor, H. Hoerer and O. H. Wilson. Melvin Baarstad was a Devils Lake visitor Friday. Mrs. Dettman and son from Sarles are moving in with Mrs. Dettman’s son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ninke. Miss Hazel O’Donnell went to Rolla Monday to assist Mrs. Guido Widmeyer with housework. Miss Ethel McMaster spent the weekend with the Baarstad girls. Ethel, who is attending high school in St. John, was accompanied home by Olive Baarstad who will spend the week there. Mr. and Mrs. Gus Bollench who spent several days visiting their cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lentz, and other relatives, left Monday via Holmfield for their home at Morden, Manitoba. Due to the quick and steady work of several Pictonites the new school was saved from being burned Thursday. A prairie fire started near there and gained such headway that it was inside the school fence before it was extinguished. Leo Allard was an overnight guest Thursday of Floyd Hoerer. November 9, 1922 Picton Andrew McMaster spent Sunday last with relatives at Minot, N. D. A little son arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Hendrickson Monday, October 30th. Miss Marie O’Donnell spent the weekend at her home here. Leslie Jackson, who has been working for E. M. Fessenden for the past two years, returned to his home near St. John Saturday to spend the winter. The school rigs are all receiving a new canvas covering and new stoves are being put in. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gailfus visited friends in Hansboro Thursday afternoon. Miss Sylvia Allard was a guest from Friday until Monday at the O’Donnell home. Mr. and Mrs. James Jarvis and sons were Rolla shoppers Thursday of last week. Mrs. Emil Nelson and son Glenn spent several days last week visiting Mrs. Nelson’s mother, Mrs. Mike Lawler of Hansboro. Mr. Kilpatrick, who will teach the high school the coming winter, arrived Thursday from his home in Grand Forks. The box social and dance held at the new school house Friday was well attended and the proceeds for the affair amounted to $127.00, which will be used to help pay for the new Willys Light plant which Adolph Lentz of Cando is installing in the new school. November 16, 1922 Picton Election Day was rather quiet. The women had their usual chats, the school children enjoyed a holiday and the men got home in time for breakfast Wednesday morning. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. McDougall and children visited the E. M. Fessenden family Sunday. Melvin Baarstad was on the sick list for several days last week. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Miller enjoyed a visit last week from several friends from across the line. Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Fernyhough are enjoying a visit from their daughter Mrs. Fred Kraus and baby of Calio. High School commenced Monday of this week. There are fourteen pupils enrolled. Mrs. Leftwich is boarding with Mrs. H. Hoerer. James Atkinson held a sale of his stock and machinery Thursday. Andrew McMaster has built an addition to his wash house and will use this for a house this winter. Leo Allard and Frederick Thuner visited with Floyd Hoerer Sunday. When it wasn’t snowing last week it was raining and very foggy. All in all it was plenty wet for those who have been kicking about the dry laws and such things, even though it wasn’t the right kind. Hansboro Mrs. Wilson, nee Clara Pound, was a passenger to Rock Lake on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Trent and family and Miss Menne returned from Bottineau Tuesday afternoon. They were accompanied on their return by Miss Menne’s sister who will visit here for a few days. The boys basketball team went to Egeland on Friday to play there. The score was 51 to 9 in favor of the Egeland club. Grandpa Wilson came to Hansboro on Saturday to visit with friends and relatives. C. L. Martinson of Devils Lake transacted business in town Monday. Mrs. Frank Walker and baby came up from Devils Lake on Saturday and will visit friends and relatives in the vicinity of Hansboro. Mrs. Harvey McLean and children left for Thief River Falls, Minnesota on Friday to visit her mother. Mr. and Mrs. Beckman of Tolna, N. Dak. are here visiting at the home of their daughter, Mrs. H. Ward. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Olson and son of Rock Lake visited friends and relatives in Hansboro over Saturday and Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Seeley left for Florida on Thursday where they will spend the winter. They will visit in Chicago, Ill., and Loganberry, Ind., on their way south. The Hansboro girls went to Rock Lake Friday to play basketball. Our girls were defeated by a score of 42 to 4. Claud Hawkins and Harvey McLean accompanied the basketball team to Egeland Friday. On Saturday evening, November 11th, about sixty friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. James Brown in the capacity of a miscellaneous shower in honor of his daughter, Miss Sue Brown. A program consisting of several selections of music followed by a mock wedding was given. After the program a luncheon was served. Miss Brown has grown to womanhood in this community and the very high esteem in which she is held by all her know her was evidenced by the long list of beautiful and useful presents with which she was showered on this occasion. Baarstad and children visited from Thursday until Saturday with Mr. Baarstad’s daughter Mrs. Pete Olson of Elsberry. On Wednesday the 29th Albert Turcotte journeyed to Mariapolis, Manitoba and was there married to a young lady of that city. Mr. and Mrs. Turcotte will go to housekeeping on the H. Shaver farm, which place Albert has worked for several years in the past. We extend our congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Turcotte. At 7 o’clock Tuesday morning, November 28th, Lee Stapleton and Miss Hazel O’Donnell were united in the holy bonds of matrimony. The wedding took place at Starkweather with Rev. Father Fields officiating. They were attended by George and Marie O’Donnell, brother and sister of the bride. Both bride and groom are well and favorably known here and their friends join in wishing them a prosperous and happy married life. Vivian Gailfus and Lauretta O’Donnell were overnight guests Thursday of Mrs. James Jarvis. Mrs. Gussie James, Leslie Strouse and son left Thursday for Ellendale, N. D. where Mr. Strouse’s little son will receive medical treatment. Miss Amanda Widmeyer arrived home last week from Minneapolis to care for her mother who is very ill. Leslie Hendrickson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Hendrickson, had his hand so badly shattered, that it was necessary for the doctor to cut them off above the second joint. Leslie in company of a number of little boys from the Hansboro school were playing with dynamite caps one of the boys touched a match to a cap Leslie was holding it exploded blowing off the ends of his fingers. Hansboro Mr. Harvey McLean drove to Egeland Monday, where he met Mrs. McLean and children who returned from Thief River Falls, Minn., where they have been visiting relatives for the past two or three weeks. Mr. Keith Gordon of Bottineau arrived in Hansboro Tuesday and spent the week visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Trent. Mr. Chris Olson went to Devils Lake on Monday. Mr. Wild visited with home folks Thursday and Friday. Miss Menne, the primary teacher, went to Edmore Wednesday to spend Thanksgiving with friends. She returned Saturday. The Sarles girls and boys basketball teams played in the local gymnasium Friday evening. The game resulted in a score of, the girls team, 1 to 0 in our favor, and the boys 23 to 6 in our favor. Francis and Harold Clifford, who are attending the Academy at Devils Lake came up on Wednesday for the Thanksgiving holidays. They returned to Devils Lake Monday. Mrs. J. O. Fernyhough went to Calio Friday to visit her daughter, Mrs. Fred Kraus. December 14, 1922 Hansboro Mrs. J. R. Wills, who has been visiting her son, C. B. Wills at Grand Forks for some time, returned home on Monday. Mrs. John Anderson went to Calio on Wednesday to visit her sister, Mrs. Fred Kraus. George Monteith of Egeland made his annual visit to the city last week and purchased poultry to ship to the eastern markets. Mr. J. Vie left for Enderlin, N. D. on Tuesday. Mrs. Johnson and family who have resided about ten miles southeast of Hansboro moved into town last week. Gus Johnson returned from Minneapolis Monday. Mrs. Cox went to Garske Thursday to visit her daughter, Mrs. Oscar Schall. The Rock Lake basketball boys played the High School boys here Friday evening. The score was 28 to 11 in favor of Hansboro. Mr. and Mrs. Lynch Leftwich who have been living in Picton the past year moved to town for the winter. Quite a number of the Hansboro folks attended the show and dance at Picton Friday evening. All reported a fine time. December 21, 1922 Picton Miss Ina Mustonen went to Cando Tuesday to work in the hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Randy Manning of Sarles visited Mrs. Manning’s brother, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Stapleton. Mrs. Sam Sommerson was on the sick list last week for several days. Ethel McMaster who is attending high school in St. John, visited from Friday until Tuesday with home folks. There was no schools on Monday owing to the storm. Professor Kilpatrick has moved to the school and taken up bachelor quarters in one of the rooms for the winter. Miss Blanche Allard visited from Friday until Thursday with Edna Baarstad. Frank Thomas was a roller shopper Thursday. Anker Rasmussen is assisting Leslie Strouse with farm work. Several of the young folks of Picton were entertained at the H. H. Baarstad home Wednesday evening. A large number of the Pictonites gathered at the school house Friday evening and had a good time. Whist, games and dancing were indulged in, everybody joining in whatever pleased their fancy. A lunch of sandwiches, coffee and cake were served at midnight. Hansboro Mr. and Mrs. Sam Robinson of Cartwright, Man., have moved to the residence recently vacated by Chas. Brown and family. Irving Wilson and Mary Dunbar drove to Rolla Tuesday. They were accompanied on their return by Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Lawler who returned from Brandon where they visited the latter’s daughter, Mrs. Bert Johnson a few days. Sam Robinson has purchased stock and opened a store in the building formerly occupied by D. D. Finley. The boys and girls basketball teams drove to Sarles Friday and played the Sarles teams. The boys game resulted in a score of 14 to 9 in favor of Hansboro and the girls 2 to 8 in favor of Sarles. Mr. Lee Leftwich of Hansboro and Miss Clara Vie of Enderlin, were married at the home of the brides parents last week. We all wish them much joy and happiness. Mr. Abe Blackorby left for Missouri the first of the week where he will spend the winter. The ladies of the town gave a shower for Mrs. Lee Leftwich at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Agarand Saturday afternoon. The bride received many nice presents. Dr. Verrett of Rolla was a professional caller in town Monday morning. December 28, 1922 Picton Mrs. Walter Gailfus left Thursday for Lethbridge, Alta., where she will spend the winter with her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Maughan. A very good Christmas program was given to a large audience at the school Saturday afternoon. Old Santa Clause gladdened the hearts of the children by appearing to distribute the presents. Ruth Gailfus was an overnight guest Wednesday of Alice O’Donnell. C. A. Rasmussen moved the remainder of his stock to his farm near St. John last week. Hansboro Messrs. The basketball boys went to Starkweather Friday to play the boys at that city. Our boys won by a score of 16 to 6.
