January 4, 1923 Hansboro Mrs. John Anderson returned from Calio on Monday where she has been visiting her sister Mrs. Fred Kraus. D. A. Blackburn of Cando was a business caller in town Wednesday and Thursday. Mrs. F. H. Murdick spent Saturday and Sunday with her daughter, Mrs. E. E. McDougall of Picton. Mr. and Mrs. N. DeKerchove are visiting at the home of the latter’s aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Weeden. We failed to mention in last weeks items that a new baby girl arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Lawler on Thursday, Dec. 21, 1922. Mr. and Mrs. L. P. McAneney of Cogswell, N. D. arrived here Monday and are visiting at the home of Mrs. McAneney’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Murdick. Mr. and Mrs. L. P. McAneney left for their home at Cogswell, N. D. on Thursday. Mr. McAneney went to Egeland on Wednesday to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. McAneney and Mrs. McAneney and children joined him at Egeland on Thursday. Miss Grace Rice left Saturday for Valley City where she will attend the State Teachers College. Picton Miss Helen McMaster visited Miss Marie O’Donnell for several days last week. Mrs. Murdick of Hansboro visited over New Years with her daughter, Mrs. E. E. McDougall. Miss Dona Currie of Perth is a guest during the holidays of Vera Hoerer. The young folks of the Lentz, Baarstad, Hoerer and O’Donnell families visited at the A. McMaster home Sunday. Sylvia Allard spent several days last week visiting the Baarstad girls. Mr. and Mrs. H. Hoerer and children and Miss Dona Currie visited at the Ed Lentz home Thursday. A number of the Picton young folks held a surprise party at the Fred Ninke home in honor of Miss Eleanor Tuesday evening. The evening was spent in games, a dainty lunch was served at midnight. Everyone reported a fine time. The moving picture show held at the school house Friday evening was very well attended. “The Virgin Paradise” which was shown instead of “The Thunderclap” was an excellent show. Due to a mistake there was no music gotten for the dance and those present danced to the music of the piano only. Again the wedding bells have run in Picton. On Wednesday, December 27, at Cartwright, Man. occurred the marriage of Miss Blanche Jarvis to Mr. William Messer of Mortlack, Sask. Miss Blanche is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Jarvis and has grown to womanhood in this vicinity winning for herself a host of friends who wish the newlyweds a long, happy prosperous wedded life. A miscellaneous shower was held at the school Friday evening in honor of the newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Stapleton and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Messer. A midnight lunch was served after the shower. January 11, 1923 Picton Tillie Lentz was an overnight guest Wednesday of Ruth Gailfus. Several members of the Sam Sommerson family are on the sick list with the grippe. Dr. Verret of Rolla was called to the Fred Thuner home Monday to prescribe for Freda and Fredrick who have been ill for some time. H. Hoerer and Arthur Murlin were Rolla callers Tuesday. Miss Dona Curry who has been visiting Vera Hoerer for some time returned to her home near Perth Saturday. Mrs. John White is reported on the sick list. Miss Louise Ouellette who spent the holidays at her home near St. John returned to the Bower home where she is working Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Wilson and children visited at the John Wilson home Wednesday. About thirty-five young people gathered at the H. Hoerer home Thursday evening for a taffy pull. Games of various kinds also helped pass the hours away. A delicious lunch was served. Those present report a very pleasant evening. Adolph and Mathilde Lentz of Cando returned to their home Saturday after a two weeks visit with their brother Edward and family. E. M. Fessenden was a St. John caller Thursday. Walter Gailfus, county commissioner, went to Cando Tuesday to attend the annual meeting. Hansboro Melvin and Carl Olson left for the University Monday after spending a week with home folks. Miss Ellen Knight returned to Perth on Friday. Judge Converse at So. St. Paul and A. B. Converse of Cresco, Ia. brothers of Mrs. C. E. Blackorby, transacted business in town on Thursday and Friday and visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Blackorby. They left for their homes on Saturday. Misses Ada and Maude Fernyhough returned to Leeds Friday after spending Christmas vacation with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Fernyhough. Miss Aletha Weeden was a passenger to Devils Lake Friday noon. Miss Grace Tribble, who is teaching at Perth, N. D. visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. Disher a few days last week. She returned to her school Friday. Leonard Graetz spent the weekend visiting friends at Crocus. W. J. Cunningham left for Cando Monday at attend the meeting of the county commissioners. C. E. Joseph, attorney of Egeland was in town Thursday attending to business matters, returning to Egeland Friday. Mr. and Mrs. O. R. Anderson and children returned home from Grand Forks Friday where they have been visiting Mrs. Anderson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Markell for the last couple of weeks. Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Finley came up from Egeland on Friday. January 25, 1923 Hansboro The Royal Neighbors gave a whist party and dance in the Hall Friday evening. Mr. Ralph Olson went to Grand Forks on Monday to visit his brothers Melvin and Carl who are attending the University. The school children have been very busy the past week reviewing for exams which will begin Monday, January 22. C. E. Blackorby was a passenger to Devils Lake Thursday returning Friday. Some of the country children stayed in town all night Tuesday on account of the bad storm. The young people of town are going to give the play “Deacon Dubbs” in the Hall next Friday evening, Jan. 26. Mrs. E. M. Fessenden and children returned from Northwood, N. D. Saturday where she has been visiting her mother for the past month. D. A. Blackburn of Cando visited in town Saturday and Sunday. Picton Hazel Strawn is on the sick list with an attack of tonsillitis. Burnetta and Eleanor O’Donnell visited their sister, Mrs. L. C. Stapleton for several days last week. Adolph Lentz returned to Cando Monday. The O’Donnell, McMaster and Fred Gailfus families were entertained at the C. A. Galloway home, Monday evening. Walter Gailfus returned home Friday from Cando where he attended the meeting of the county commissioners. Mr. Gailfus was elected delegate to a state meeting of commissioners to be held at Minot and left Monday for that place. Fred Thuner took his daughter Freda to Rolla last Monday for medical treatment. Miss Freda will remain there about two weeks under the care of Dr. Verret. The Allard and Baarstad young folks visited friends near St. John Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jodoin visited at the L. Allard home for several days last week. February 1, 1923 Hansboro A. H. Newman of Cando, County Agent, transacted business in our village on Monday. Mrs. Geo. Foulkes, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. B. L. Thomas for a few days, returned to Cando last Monday. Carl Johnson of Perth visited in town a few days the latter part of the week. Mrs. Sam Robinson has been visiting friends in Brandon this weeks. The play Deacon Dubs which was given in the hall last Friday evening was very well attended and much enjoyed by all. R. Anderson’s for a delicious lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The proceeds of the play were for the benefit of the church. Miss Lydia Antilla, who has been assisting with the work at the Roy Lymburn home left Friday for Cando. Miss Rogna Peterson is assisting Mrs. Lymburn now. H. Chadon of Minnesota is visiting at the home of his sister Mrs. Poyzer and helping Mr. Poyzer in the elevator. Mr. A. Wild spent the weekend with his parents at Egeland. He returned to Hansboro Monday. Grandma Blackorby who has been ill is reported much improved at this writing. Picton Adolph and Benny Lentz came up from Cando Thursday. Miss Selma Tuenge is a guest of her sister, Mrs. Ed Lentz. Edna Baarstad visited Blanche Allard for several days last week. A large crowd attended the movie “Perjury” Friday. Music for the dance held after the movie was furnished by the four piece orchestra from Hansboro. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Lentz and children of Gronna visited relatives in the vicinity for a week. School closed Friday for a ten day vacation. Professor Kilpatrick left Saturday for his home in Grand Forks where he will spend his vacation. (Last Week) Mrs. Jarvis and Olive Jarvis were on the sick list for several days last week. Hazel Galloway visited her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gailfus last week. Hazel Strawn who has been very ill with tonsillitis returned to school Friday. Miss Freda Thuner who has been receiving medical treatment at Dr. Verret’s hospital in Rolla, returned home Saturday much improved in health. Alice O’Donnell visited overnight Thursday with Mrs. C. A. Galloway. Archie McLean of Rolla was a business caller in this vicinity last week. Jean McDougall visited with Dulcie Gailfus Saturday. Fred Ninke transacted business in Rolla Saturday. A meeting was held Tuesday to decide whether Picton should have winter or summer school. The vote was nine to eleven in favor of winter school. Mrs. E. M. Fessenden and children who visited relatives at Northwood, N. D. for several weeks returned home Friday. H. Hoerer is on the sick list with the flu. February 8, 1923 Picton Hazel Strawn and Lauretta O’Donnell spent vacation week at the former’s home near St. John. Several members of the L. Allard and H. H. Baarstad families were entertained at the Geo. Sutherland home Saturday evening. Mrs. E. M. Fessenden and children have been on the sick list the past week. Geo. O’Donnell with the assistance of several neighbors has been busy the past week loading a car of wheat at Armourdale. Ed Lentz was a St. John caller Tuesday. Olive Baarstad visited Avon Allard for several days last week. Mrs. Alfred Lentz and children returned to their home near Gronna Wednesday. Alice O’Donnell visited Helen McMaster for several days last week. Adolph and Benny Lentz returned to their home at Cando via St. John Tuesday. On Friday last Mrs. Leslie Straus had the misfortune of falling down the cellar, thereby sustaining a fracture of the hip bone. Dr. Verret of Rolla was called and made the patient as comfortable as possible. Miss Blanche Allard is at the present assisting in the care and household duties of Mrs. Straus. Hansboro Sol Hale returned Sunday evening from Sarles where he visited friends and relatives for a few days. Mr. A. Wild went to Grand Forks Thursday to visit his brother at the University. He returned Monday. Mrs. G. A. Olson and Ruth spent Saturday and Sunday visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Olson of Rock Lake. C. A. Weeden was a passenger to Devils Lake Thursday returning Friday. Miss Graetz of Rock Lake visited her brother Leonard between trains on Thursday. Joe Trent left for Grand Forks on Saturday where he will attend the University. Miss Hazel Lawrence is visiting friends in Cando. February 15, 1923 Egeland Mrs. W. N. McAneney departed on Friday for Sherwood where she will visit her son Blaine McAneney. February 22, 1923 Picton (Delayed Last Week) Wm. Williams was a passenger to Devils Lake Friday. Eleanor and Bernetta O’Donnell visited their sister, Mrs. L. C. Stapleton last week. Vera Hoerer visited Dona Curry of Perth Monday. There was no school Thursday on account of the storm. Margaret Knight and Mary Lou Watts of Hansboro spent the weekend visiting the O’Donnell girls. Mr. and Mrs. Lacroix and children of Maryapolis, Manitoba arrived Friday for a visit with Mrs. Lacroix’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hector Gilbert. Mrs. O’Donnell was on the sick list for several days last week. Edna Summerson and Ruth Gailfus visited at the H. Hoerer home Thursday. Mrs. Wm. Maloney has been at Rolla the past week caring for her daughter Tillie who has been very ill. Picton (This Week) Alfred Lentz drove over from Gronna Wednesday to the Ed Lentz home. He returned Thursday, accompanied by his brother Adolph of Cando who spent last week here. Mr. and Mrs. Lynch Leftwich of Hansboro visited at the A. McMaster home Sunday. Mrs. Ed Lentz who has been confined to her bed the past two weeks with an attack of the flu is now able to be around. Lawrence McMaster was a guest of Frank McDougall the past week. The G. Hikkilla and J. Wilson families spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Wilson. Miss Dossie Burley of St. John is assisting in the care of Mrs. Leslie Straus. There were only two days of school last week on account of the blizzard. H. Hoerer who has been confined to the house for some time with the flu was able to be out Saturday. Mrs. E. E. McDougall went to Hansboro Monday to accompany her mother Mrs. Frank Murdick to the General Hospital at Devils Lake. February 22, 1923 Hansboro (Delayed Last Week) There was no school on Monday on account of it being a legal holiday. Miss Alberta Weeden of Crocus spent the weekend visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Weeden. Mr. Keith Gordon of Bottineau has been visiting friends in town this week. Miss Laura Kellogg who has been visiting friends and relatives in Grand Forks County for some time returned on Tuesday. Hansboro (This Week) Miss Lillian Ward went to Rock Lake last Friday where she visited Dorothy Keeny until Monday. Mrs. Illman and daughter of Montana arrived on Saturday and are visiting at the home of Mrs. Illman’s mother, Mrs. A. Blackorby. Friday, Feb. 9th, our basketball team railroaded to Rock Lake only to return with the short end of 33 to 8. A disinterested attitude prevailed the Hansboro boys all through the game and as a result little team work was exhibited. From the outset the Rock Lake team set up a terrific rate that was not let down until the game was over. Dorsey Lawrence was carried off the floor in the second half because of injury, Bob Geyer substituted. The boys were well pleased with fine treatment given them at Rock Lake. Mrs. Ira Carson of Rolla has been visiting at the home of her sister Mrs. John Anderson this week. Owing to the storm there was no train from Tuesday until Saturday evening. Mr. Brooks died at the home of his son H. H. Brooks, Wednesday morning after an illness of several months. The body, accompanied by J. H. Brooks was taken to Missouri on Saturday. On his arrival in Devils Lake after returning from Missouri, Mr. Blackorby had a paralytic stroke and was taken to the hospital. Mr. J. E. Barker left on Friday to be with him. Mr. Barker returned Saturday and stated that Mr. Blackorby was somewhat improved. March 1, 1923 Picton Mrs. Wm. Maloney returned Wednesday from Devils Lake where she has been with her daughter Tilly who underwent an operation for appendicitis at the Mercy Hospital. Mrs. E. E. McDougall returned from Devils Lake Friday. A Farmers Institute was held at the school house Tuesday evening. County Agent Neuman and M. Morgan of the Agricultural College spoke on diversified farming. A delicious lunch was served by the ladies. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing and visiting. Leon Allard was an overnight visitor to St. John Thursday. Freddie Galloway visited his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gailfus for several days last week. Marie O’Donnell spent the weekend with home folks. Prof. Kilpatrick was called to his home in Grand Forks Monday by the serious illness of his wife and son. Mr. and Mrs. J. Jarvis entertained the E. E. McDougall family at a birthday party in honor of their son, Oliver, on Sunday. Hansboro Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kraus came up Saturday to visit at the home of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Fernyhough. Mr. Kraus returned on Monday but Mrs. Kraus will visit here for some time. Mr. John Chaden who has been visiting at the home of his sister, Mrs. J. H. Poyzer for some time, returned to his home in Minnesota Tuesday. Mr. Wm. Disher made a business trip to Elsberry on Tuesday. Mrs. F. H. Murdick went to Devils Lake Monday to consult a doctor. She was accompanied by her daughter Mrs. E. E. McDougall. They returned on Friday. Mr. Keith Gordon of Bottineau who has been visiting friends in town for a few weeks returned home Friday. February 8, 1923 Hansboro M. S. Griver was a passenger to Devils Lake on Friday returning Sunday morning on the special train. Mr. Sanford drove to Rolla Tuesday morning. Mr. Hobe Richardson of Rolla visited friends and relatives in town on Wednesday evening. Messrs. Lynch Leftwich and Claude Hawkins went to Devils Lake Friday to attend the basketball tournament at that place. Jas. Taylor drove over from Perth and transacted business in town Friday. Mr. Walter Blackorby of Satesia, Montana who came to visit his mother during her illness returned to his home Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. McLean of Sarles have been visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. McLean for several days. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Carmichael of Cando came up to attend the funeral of Mrs. Blackorby on Wednesday. Mr. Jas. Blackorby and Wm. Stephens returned to Devils Lake Thursday. Rev. J. G. Moore of Grand Forks conducted the funeral service for Mrs. A. Blackorby at the church Wednesday afternoon. Frances and Harold Clifford returned to the Academy at Devils Lake Thursday after spending a few weeks in this city visiting friends and relatives. March 15, 1923 Picton Louis Turcotte who has been visiting his brothers Albert and August for several weeks returned to his home near Rolla Friday. Geo. Sutherland was a St. John shopper Saturday. Members of the A. McMaster, J. O’Donnell, C. A. Galloway, Fred and Hugo Gailfus families have been sick the past week with the flu. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Nelson and baby visited at the Ed Lentz home Sunday. Miss Emma Lentz of Cando is a guest of her brother and sister-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lentz. Mrs. E. E. McDougall visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Murdick of Hansboro Sunday. Prof. Kilpatrick returned from his home in Grand Forks where he was called by the serious illness of his wife and son Monday. Jean McDougall visited in Hansboro for several days last week. March 22, 1923 Hansboro Harry Porter who has been attending the Agricultural College at Fargo since the first of the year, returned home on Monday. There was no train on Saturday owing to the storm. Miss Ellen Knight who is teaching at Perth came home on Monday to visit her folks until Sunday when she returned. The Perth school being closed on account of sickness. A St. Patrick’s dance was given in the hall Friday evening. The music was furnished by the Agarand Orchestra and refreshments served by the Royal Neighbors. In spite of the storm there was a good attendance and all reported a good time. Carl Johnson of Perth visited at the C. Lawrence home the latter part of the week. Miss Alberta Weeden came from Crocus Monday evening and visited at the home of her parents until the following Monday. Her school being closed on account of sickness. Picton August and Albert Turcotte are enjoying a visit from their brother Eugene who is employed on a farm near Cando. H. Hoerer and Leon Allard made a trip to Fish Lake for wood last Thursday returning Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sommerson visited friends in Rolla Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Hoerer and children were guests of Mr. and Mrs. James Jarvis Sunday. Geo. Sutherland who has spent the winter on his farm here moved to his home near St. John Thursday. The Hansboro Orchestra gave a St. Patrick’s dance at the school Friday night. Due to the stormy weather and so many being sick the attendance was very small. All were compelled to stay until morning on account of a nice Dakota blizzard. Driving of the school routes for the spring term was let Tuesday to the following: No. 1 Ed Lentz, No. 2, Clarence Boppre, No. 3, Gus Marschner, No. 4 and 5, George O’Donnell, No. 6, Geo. Hoff. Mrs. Gussie James who has spent the winter at Thief River Falls, Minn. with the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Straus who was receiving medical treatment at the hospital there returned home last week. We are glad to report the little boy’s health much improved. Mrs. Ed Lentz and son were passengers to Perth via Rolla Thursday. They will visit Mrs. Lentz’s parents Mr. and Mrs. H. Tuenge. Mr. and Mrs. H. Hoerer visited friends in Perth Monday. Miss Emma Lentz returned to her home in Cando Thursday after a visit of several weeks with her brother Ed. March 29, 1923 Hansboro Pearl Blackorby was a passenger to Devils Lake Monday returning Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. A. Olson and son came up from Rock Lake Tuesday. Mr. Olson returned the same day but Mrs. Olson and son will visit here for a few weeks. Mr. J. B. Smith went to Cando Tuesday to attend court. Mrs. N. DeKerchove who has been visiting in Leeds, N. D. for some time arrived in town Saturday and is visiting at the home of her uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Weeden. Mrs. C. E. Blackorby went to Devils Lake on Wednesday and returned Saturday. J. D. Leftwich made a business trip to Cando Wednesday via Devils Lake. J. H. Brooks returned from Missouri Wednesday where he has been visiting for some time. Miss Iverson of Starkweather came up on Saturday and is visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Olson. Converse-Gordon -- Mrs. Velma Converse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Murdick of this city and Mr. Keith Gordon of Bottineau were married at Cartwright, Man. Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Gordon is well known in this vicinity and Mr. Gordon is a farmer near Bottineau where they will make their future home. Congratulations! Picton Mr. and Mrs. E. E. McDougall entertained Mr. Keith Gordon and bride at a six o’clock dinner Saturday. The bride is the sister of Mrs. McDougall. Mrs. C. A. Galloway went to Rolla Wednesday to have dental work done. Mrs. Hobe Richardson and little son Douglas of Rolla came over Wednesday and will spend some time with Mrs. Richardson’s mother and Alice Bower. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Miller were entertained Sunday at the Fred Thuner home. Mrs. E. E. McDougall and some of the children visited in town Thursday at the F. H. Murdick home. C. A. Galloway was an over Sunday visitor with his parents at Rolla. Lida Wilson from Lakeview township is assisting in the care of the flu patients at the home of her brother Dannie Wilson. No school was held Friday owing to the severe storm that raged in this community. George O’Donnell accompanied by his mother and sister Burnetta and Edna Hoerer and Hazel Strawn were Rolla callers Saturday, the ladies having dental work done – poor George. H. H. Baarstad who has been visiting his daughter Mrs. Pete Olson of Elsberry for some time, returned home Thursday. Coy Underwood was elected township supervisor at the election Tuesday. George Brunett who has spent the past year in this vicinity returned to his home last week. The young school boys and girls of this vicinity are getting their books hunted up to start the three months term of school which begins Monday, April 2nd. April 5, 1923 Hansboro Miss Iverson who visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Olson the first part of the week, returned to Starkweather on Wednesday. Joe Trent, who is attending the University came home on Thursday to spend Easter vacation with his parents, Fr. and Mrs. L. D. Trent. C. E. Blackorby was a Cartwright caller Thursday. Mr. Leon Agarand installed a radio in his residence this week. Mr. C. Hawkins left for Edmore Friday where he will visit friends for a few days. Miss Marie Olson of Cando arrived here Friday and is visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. B. L. Thomas. Mr. A. Wild spend the weekend with home folks at Egeland. Carl Olson, who is attending the University came home on Thursday to spend Easter vacation with his parents. Mrs. E. L. Clatterbuck went to Picton Monday to visit her mother Mrs. Alice Bower. Louise Jennison, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jennison, who has been very ill for some time died at two a.m. Saturday morning, March 31, 1923. Funeral services were held in the church Sunday afternoon. Rev. Apel of Grand Forks preached the sermon. Mrs. B. L. Thomas had the misfortune to fall down the cellar the first part of the week. Fessenden Sunday. Lauretta O’Donnell and Hazel Strawn spent the weekend visiting Mrs. L. C. Stapleton. Mrs. Gussie James was a passenger to Cando last Tuesday. Mrs. Fred Gailfus and Mrs. C. A. Galloway visited at the H. Hoerer home Monday. Mrs. O’Donnell and daughter, Mrs. L. Stapleton visited Mrs. J. Jarvis Thursday. W. Gailfus attended the county commissioner meeting in Cando last week. Arthur Murlin was a Rolla caller Thursday. On Friday morning while Fred Gailfus was hauling feed he was fortunate in bringing down a female wolf, with a shotgun returning to the same place later in the day he captured the litter of seven young. A good catch for one day. Hansboro Mrs. Fred Kraus and son, who have been visiting at the home of Mrs. Kraus’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Fernyhough for some time returned to their home in Calio on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy returned from Egeland Monday where they spent the weekend. Carl Olson and Joe Trent who spent their Easter holidays with their parents returned to the University Wednesday noon. Mrs. E. Watts who has been at the hospital in Devils Lake for some time is reported somewhat improved. There was no school this week on account of the condition the roads are in. Alfred Olson came up from Rock Lake on Saturday to visit his parents Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Olson. Mrs. C. E. Blackorby who has been confined to her bed for some time died at 11:15 pm on Sunday, April 8th, 1923. Obituary next week. April 19, 1923 Hansboro Mrs. E. Watts who has been in the Devils Lake hospital for some time returned home on Monday. Mrs. E. L. Clatterbuck received a message from Saskatchewan on Monday stating that her brother was seriously ill and left for Canada the same evening via St. John. Misses Ada and Maude Fernyhough who have been teaching near Leeds, N. D. returned home Saturday. Hob Richardson of Rolla visited in our city Saturday afternoon. Miss Hazel Lawrence who has accepted position in the Armourdale school began her duties on Monday. Rev. Simpson came up from Starkweather on Thursday to conduct the funeral services of Mrs. C. E. Blackorby. Miss Amy Olson went to Rock Lake Saturday to visit her brother Alfred. Picton W. Gailfus who attended the commissioner’s meeting at Cando and then spent several days in Devils Lake having dental work done returned home Friday via Rolla. School was closed Thursday for several days as the big coulee broke up that night and the water covered the grade on both sides of the north bridge making crossing impossible. Alfred Bower was called to Morse, Sask. Monday last by the serious illness of his brother Sidney. He was accompanied by his sister Mrs. E. Clatterbuck of Hansboro and Mrs. Wm. Glassford of Rolla. Frank Thomas transacted business in Rolla Friday. Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Wilson were Rolla shoppers Friday. Mr. and Mrs. H. Richardson and son of Rolla are visiting Mrs. Richardson’s mother Mrs. Alice Bower. C. O. Wilson, Rolla contractor has been busy the past week building a hayloft in the school barn and making several other minor improvements there. Dr. Graff, a Bisbee veterinary, examined C. Galloway’s herd of cattle for tuberculosis last Monday finding them all ok. This would be a wise thing for all farmers to have done. He returned to Bisbee Tuesday. The young gentlemen evidently believe spring has come. They held a meeting at the school house Sunday to plan their baseball team and games. Helen Summerson visited overnight Wednesday with Mamie Hendrickson. Freddie Galloway was on the sick list for several days last week. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jodoin of Hansboro vicinity visited at the L. April 26, 1923 Picton The Home Demonstration Club members were entertained by Mrs. E. E. McDougall. The subject was turkey raising, was handled by Mrs. James Jarvis. Officers were elected for the coming year. A very dainty lunch was served by the hostess after the business meeting. The baseball boys gave a dance in the school Friday night, clearing over thirty dollars. Music was furnished by the Hansboro Orchestra. G. Hikkilla moved from the W. Irving farm which he has worked for several years to the B. L. Thomas farm northwest of Hansboro which he will work this year. Adolph and Otto Lentz of Cando visited their brother Ed Friday. E. M. Fessenden was a St. John caller Thursday. School opened Tuesday after a three day vacation. Wm. Irving of Rolla was attending to his farming interests here Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. J. Ed Sonnenberg and baby daughter Beatrice arrived here Wednesday from Daulphin, Manitoba and are at the home of Mr. Sonnenberg’s mother, Mrs. H. Miller. Mrs. Miller has adopted her little granddaughter and Mr. Sonnenberg will visit his mother a short time. May 31, 1923 Obituary Ella Mae Donaldson, was born at Frankfort, Minnesota. She was educated in the common school at Spring Valley, Minnesota. She moved with her parents to DeSmet, S. D. in 1882 where she was married to F. H. Murdick, Dec. 25, 1883. Moving to North Dakota in the year 1902 locating at Cando and moved from there to Hansboro in 1906 where she has resided up to the time of her death at 6 pm, May 25, 1923. To this union four children were born. The son died in infancy, the daughters are: Mrs. E. E. McDougall, Mrs. L. P. McAneney, Mrs. Keith Gordon. Besides her husband and daughters she leaves to mourn her loss, one brother and four sisters. She was an active church worker. Member of the Ladies Aid, Missionary Circle and the F. I. C. Club. The funeral services were held in the church Monday morning, Rev. Geo. B. Denison officiating. Picton Mr. and Mrs. Chas. McMaster and children of Rolla are visiting at the Wm. Maloney home. Mrs. J. Quite a lot of excitement was caused last Monday evening when the back part of the pool room caught fire. With the help of the citizens in town the fire was soon extinguished, little damage being done. Much credit is due Mrs. R. Lymburn for the preparation of the play. June 7, 1923 Picton Mr. and Mrs. E. E. McDougall had as their guests Sunday last Mr. and Mrs. Ora Wills and family from Hansboro. Mr. E. E. McDougall autoed to Sarles Sunday where he consulted Dr. Emert. The ball game between Picton and Syberia resulted in a victory for Picton the score being 16 to 11. Mrs. James Jarvis and son were guests of Mr. Lee Stapleton Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Stapleton had as their guests last Sunday Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Leftwich of Hansboro. Mrs. Emery Amiss was taken to Devils Lake Saturday to have an x-ray taken on her ankle. Mr. Amis accompanied here. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Olson and son spent Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Olson. Miss Alberta Weeden, who has been teaching at Ellendale, N. D. returned home Saturday via Rolla. Mr. and Mrs. Price and Mrs. Sanford autoed to Rolla Saturday afternoon. C. A. Weeden was a passenger to Devils Lake Wednesday returning on Thursday. W. E. H. Porter went to Cartwright Monday morning, from there he will leave for his father’s home in England. He expects to return sometime in August. June 14, 1923 Hansboro Dudley Trent assisted with the work in the Griver store during the absence of Mr. Grier. The eighth grade class autoed to Cando Thursday where they had their class picture taken. Mr. Griver went to Minot Tuesday where he attended an I. O. O. F. convention. Fr. G. H. McLean and Miss Myrtle A. Weeden gave a kitchen shower in honor of Miss Mennie last Wednesday evening, May 30th. The evening was spent in games and music after which refreshments were served. Many useful gifts were received. Joe Trent returned from Grand Forks on Saturday where he has been attending the University. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Poyzer and family visited friends and relatives in Mylo and Willow City on Saturday and Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Gibbons of Grand Forks arrived here Sunday to visit for a few days. They were accompanied by Melvin A. Olson, who has been attending the University. Miss Mennie, who has been teaching here the past year, left Saturday for Penn, N. D. where she will visit friends. Mr. A. Wild, who has been teaching here the past year, returned to his home at Egeland Saturday. A miscellaneous shower was given by the Ladies Aid at the church last Friday evening in honor of Miss Mennie. The evening was spent in games after which a delicious lunch was served. Miss Mennie received many beautiful and useful gifts. Everyone present had a most enjoyable time. Mrs. B. L. Thomas went to Cando Friday to attend the wedding of her sister, Miss Marie Olson, who was married on Saturday. June 21, 1923 Picton Mr. and Mrs. Hobe Richardson and baby of Rolla visited Mrs. Richardson’s mother, Mrs. Alice Bower on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Charley McMaster and children of Rolla are guests this week at the A. McMaster home. Charles Widmeyer spent several days last week at his farm home in the Turtle Mountains. Andrew McMaster and daughter Helen, George O’Donnell and sister Alice autoed to LaFietch, Man., Sunday where they will visit for several days. Misses Alberta and Nellie Weeden left Monday for Valley City, via Leeds, where they will attend summer school. Picton (Delayed Last Week) Misses Vera Koski and Amelia Johnson of Rolla were guests of Edna Summerson Monday. Mrs. F. H. Fernyhough and three youngest children left Saturday last for San Diego, California where Mrs. Fernyhough will visit her parents and other relatives some time. Miss Maud Miller, teacher of the grammar grades, left Saturday for Valley City where she will attend Normal. A substitute will finish the remaining week of her term. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lymburn motored to Moorhead, Minnesota, Tuesday where Mrs. Lymburn will attend the Moorhead normal school. Mr. Lymburn returned the latter part of the week. Mr. C. E. Blackorby and son Edward and Mr. Jack Blackorby autoed to Cando Wednesday. Ruth Walker and son Harold spent Tuesday with her folks Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Disher. There was a big barn dance at the Cunningham farm last Wednesday evening. The Club Women from east of Hansboro gave the dance the music was furnished by the Johnstone orchestra. A number of Hansboroites attended. Joe Trent is keeping books in the Anderson Hardware during the summer months. Mr. and Mrs. Lynch Leftwich have moved to the Agarand farm. J. O. Carter moved into the house recently vacated by Mr. and Mrs. Lynch Leftwich. Picton Mr. and Mrs. Sam Summerson and son Walter autoed to Leeds Wednesday where Mrs. Summerson and Walter took the train for South Dakota where they will spend the summer visiting relatives at various places. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Nelson visited at the John White home Sunday evening. Andrew McMaster and daughters Anna and Helen, George O’Donnell and sister Alice returned from LaFietch, Manitoba Tuesday. Bill Boppre autoed to Dunseith Friday for his sisters Dora and Blanche who have been employed there for some time. They returned home Saturday. A large number of Pictonites attended the dance at Cunningham’s barn near Sarles Thursday. Miss Lillian Ward of Hansboro is assisting at the E. M. Fessenden home. Mr. and Mrs. H. Hoerer, daughter Vera and Mrs. J. Jarvis were St. John shoppers Tuesday. Mrs. J. O. Fernyhough and daughters Maud and Ada were Rolla callers Friday. Maud remained there for a visit with her sister Mrs. Ira Corson. School in the primary and grammar grades closed Friday. Miss Myrtle Lillya left Saturday for her home at Monticello, Minn. Enroute there she will visit friends at Valley City. Rev. Appleton of Hansboro held services in the school Sunday. Church services next Sunday will be at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday school at 11:30. Everyone is given a cordial invitation to attend. One of the worst wind storms ever experienced hit here Friday night. A very small amount of damage was done until it passed the E. E. McDougall farm where it completely wrecked the machine shed and chicken house, also badly damaged the large barn. The threshing machine which was stored in the shed was overturned, the binder, drill and smaller implements stored there were also badly wrecked. The barn is the only part of the loss covered by insurance. July 5, 1923 Picton Professor Kilpatrick closed a very successful term of school Friday. He departed Saturday via Rolla for his home in Grand Forks. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lentz and Walter are visiting relatives at Morden, Manitoba. Alice O’Donnell visited overnight Tuesday with Vera Hoerer. Frank Thomas transacted business in Rolla Tuesday. Mrs. O’Donnell was a caller at the H. Hoerer home Friday. Avon Allard visited Lauretta O’Donnell Wednesday. Leon Allard is enjoying a visit from his sister and her daughter who arrived here Saturday from Maryapolis. Mr. and Mrs. Lynch Leftwich of Hansboro have moved on the J. Agarand farm. H. H. Baarstad and Hazel Thompson, Mearl McMaster visited at the Pete Olson home at Elsberry Sunday. The big barn on the John White farm was completely destroyed by fire Thursday evening. Several horses in the barn at the time the fire started were brought out safely. Also practically all of the harness was saved. Several other buildings nearby were saved only by strenuous efforts. The windmill tower located in the barn was also damaged. The origin of the fire is not definitely known. Unfortunately the loss was not covered by insurance. Hansboro Mr. and Mrs. Harvey McLean, who have been visiting relatives in Thief River Falls for the past two weeks, returned home Tuesday. The carpenters are busy putting another roof on the Anderson Hardware store which was destroyed by wind. Mr. and Mrs. Poyzer and family left Tuesday for Spirit Wood Lake, Iowa to visit with relatives for a few weeks. They made the trip by auto. Betty Strawn has been visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Johnstone for several days. Lois and Joe Trent and Celia Olson went to Little Fish Lake to spend Sunday. Mrs. Margaret L. Brown of Portland, Ore., formerly of Hansboro, arrived here Friday for a visit with her daughter Mrs. Leon Agarand. The many Hansboro friends of Reuel Sande now of Grand Forks might be interested in knowing of Reuel’s marriage on June 20th to Miss Clara Omlie of Northwood, N. D. For their honeymoon trip they are taking a five week auto tour through Yellowstone Park. Mr. and Mrs. Reuel Sande will make their home in Grand Forks. Roy Lymburn returned Tuesday evening from Moorhead, Minnesota. July 12, 1923 Hansboro Mr. and Mrs. Roth visited at the home of G. E. Geyer a few days last week. Most of the people of Hansboro spent the Fourth in Rolla, a few going to Cando. Mr. C. E. Blackorby, Edwin and Ellen drove to Devils Lake where Ellen was left to spend a few days. Mr. Blackorby and Edward going to McVille. They returned Saturday evening. Myrtle Weeden is spending a few days at the John Ford cottage at Lake Park, Devils Lake this week. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Olson home the past week, Melvin and Ralph taking him back to Leeds on Sunday by car. There was quite a strong wind with the rain that fell last Thursday evening six-tenths of an inch of rain fell. Mr. and Mrs. G. H. McLean have as their guest Mrs. McLean’s niece from Thief River Falls. Ralph and John Lawler motored to Brandon to take in the fair on the sixth. The Misses Ada and Maud Fernyhough returned from Churchs Ferry on Saturday after a few days visit there. The M. J. and Charles Kessler families spent the Fourth at Fish Lake. Hans Langseth of Barney, N. D. was crowned in Chicago Tuesday as the “grand whiskerino.” Langseth’s beard is 17 feet in length and has been cultivated for 56 years. He is now 76 years old. Picton Ethel McMaster was a passenger to Netherville, Manitoba Monday via Cartwright where she will visit her uncle for some time. A large number of Pictonites attended the Cando fair Thursday. Sneider, district superintendent of the Methodist Church for this district, conducted services here on Sunday night, holding a business meeting after the church. Rock Lake, Picton and Hansboro have decided to have one pastor serve all three places for the coming year. Tom McCarthy has been elected cashier of the Bank of Hansboro. Mrs. H. S. Blackorby, who has been ill for several days, went to Cando Saturday where he will receive medical treatment for a few days. He was accompanied by Mr. C. E. Blackorby. The sad news was received last week of the death of Forrest Tribble, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Tribble, formerly of Hansboro, in California. Mr. and Mrs. Tribble have the sincere sympathy of the Hansboro people in their bereavement. September 6, 1923 Hansboro Mr. and Mrs. E. Watts and Mrs. Poyzer were callers in Rolla Monday. Lawler went to Brandon last week to visit friends and relatives. Alex Brown and Lottie Rice were married at the Methodist parsonage in Cando September 29th. Mr. and Mrs. Brown are well known in this community having resided here a number of years. We wish them much happiness and success. Picton Mrs. Leslie Straus was on the sick list for several days last week. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Miller and daughter and Edward Sunenberg were visitors at the Ed Lentz home Sunday. The teachers entertained the school children at a wiener roast Friday. Buns were also served and a fine time was had by all. The Misses Tillie Maloney and Jane Leslie were Rolla callers Saturday. Andrew McMaster returned from Devils Lake Monday. Miss Olive Baarstad spent the past week visiting her sister, Mrs. Pete Olson of Elsberry. W. Gailfus returned from Cando on Saturday. The Misses Cochrane, Brassard and Rice are in Cando this week attending institute. There have been several fall movings as usual. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Stapleton have moved to the Mike O’Donnell farm, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Stapleton have moved from the Frank Murdick farm to the Mrs. J. D. Leftwich farm north of Hansboro; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Turcotte to the J. O. P. Durocher farm near St. John and Donal Guilbert to the farm vacated by Albert Turcotte. October 18, 1923 Picton Mr. and Mrs. John Henderson of Devils Lake visited Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Galloway and family Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Charles McMaster and children of Rolla are staying at the A. M. McMaster farm. Ira Corson of Rolla was a caller in the vicinity last week. Mr. H. Richardson and son visited relatives in Hansboro for several days last week. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Stapleton are busy entertaining a little son who arrived at their home last Thursday. Olive Baarstad returned from a visit with relatives at Elsberry Monday of this week. Miss Esther Wilson and Wilfred Hilgartner were united in marriage at Killarney, Manitoba, Tuesday of this week. They will make their home on the Widmeyer farm. Andrew McMaster was a passenger to Devils Lake from Rolla Monday. Hansboro J. R. Wills, who has been postmaster in Hansboro for many years, has resigned and expects to move west in the near future. Harvey McLean autoed to Sarles one day last week. Mrs. Mack Pownell of York is visiting with friends and relatives in town this week. Orra Wills and family were entertained at the Everett Lawler home Sunday. Roy Lymburn has been appointed postmaster. November 1, 1923 Otto Pikkarainen Dead The community was shocked to hear the sudden death of Mr. Otto Pikkarainen of Armoudale on Tuesday, November 23. The deceased had charge of the Armourdale Elevator, as well as conducting a small store and on being summoned to dinner on Tuesday by his son-in-law, John Gores, he was found sitting in a chair in his office, dead. Heart failure was pronounced as the cause. Mr. Pikkarainen, about 50 years of age was a resident of this community for several years past. He was a man of sterling qualities and his sudden demise comes as a warning to us all. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday at Finn Hall, several miles west of here, at which place the remains were interred. The deceased was a member of the I. O. O. F. order, and a large number of local members were present. Music was furnished by the Rock Lake choir. The wife and three daughters and three sons are left to mourn the loss, besides four grandchildren. Except one son, who was recently married and could not be located, all the family were present at the funeral. The sympathy of the community is extended. Hansboro Born to Mr. and Mrs. Tom McCarthy, Wednesday, a boy. Both mother and baby are doing nicely. J. H. Brooks made a business trip to Devils Lake Thursday. Mrs. Levine, nee Caroline Booth, is visiting at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. August Miller. Picton (From Last Week) Charley McMaster autoed to Devils Lake Saturday and spent the day with his brother Andrew, who recently underwent an operation at the Mercy Hospital. He reports a favorable improvement. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Curry and little daughter of Perth visited at the H. Hoerer home Sunday. Wm. Maloney and family are preparing to move to Washington, where they will make their future home. Mr. Boppre and family have moved on the farm vacated by William Maloney. Walter Gailfus suffered a paralytic stroke Thursday. His many friends hope he will soon recover. Picton (This Week) Mrs. Alice Bower and sons Albert and W. G. visited at the Mike Peterson home near St. John Sunday. Miss Hattie Guedesse who has been employed at the E. E. McDougall home for several weeks, returned to her home near St. John Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Galloway who have farmed the W. Gailfus farm for several years have moved to the Wm. Irving farm recently worked by G. Hikkillia. Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Fernyhough are entertaining a little daughter who arrived at their place Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gailfus have moved to the W. Gailfus farm. Mr. McDougall left Saturday for his home in Seattle, Washington, after a visit of several with his son E. E. of this place. Adolph Lentz was a Cando caller in this vicinity last week. Mrs. H. Strawn of Fish Lake vicinity is assisting at the E. E. McDougall home. Annie Wilson left last week for Portland, Ore. Helen and Merle McMaster, Harry Baarstad and Alice O’Donnell visited over Sunday with A. McMaster who is in the Devils Lake Mercy Hospital. Frank Thomas left Monday for his home in Virginia. Hansboro J. R. Wills and family left Saturday for Staples, North Dakota where they will visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wills’ son, C. B. Wills. Mr. M. Lawler autoed to Cartwright Thursday where he met his daughter, Mrs. Bert John of Brandon. Mrs. John will visit friends and relatives here for a few days. Pennie Orton and C. E. Mr. Chris Olson of Cando was a caller in town Friday. Doris Pillsbury left for her home in Devils Lake Friday evening to spend the weekend with her parents at that place. Howard Geary and little son were callers in town Wednesday. John Walker returned Saturday from Warren, Minnesota, where he has been the past week. Picton Miss Marie O’Donnell visited from Friday until Sunday with home folks. Mrs. James Jarvis assisted at the F. H. Fernyhough home for several days last week. Mrs. H. B. Leslie and daughter Janey visited friends in Canada last week. Mr. and Mrs. H. Gailfus and children were callers at the Aug. Miller home in Hansboro Sunday. Andrew McMaster who has spent the past two weeks in the Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, returned to Rolla Saturday. He will spend several days there at his father’s home. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kessler and children of Hansboro vicinity visited at the O’Donnell home Sunday. The program given at the school Friday night was very well attended and enjoyed by all. December 13, 1923 Hansboro Mr. Murdick, who has been spending several weeks in Bemidji, Minnesota, returned to Hansboro Friday. Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Poyzer and son Marvin of Willow City were guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Poyzer of this city over Sunday. Miss Jennie Finell returned from Oberon Monday, where she spent her Thanksgiving vacation. December 20, 1923 Picton Miss Vera Koski of Perth vicinity was an overnight guest Monday of Miss Edna Sommerson. Mrs. W. B. Underwood is reported on the sick list. Miss Olive Baarstad visited last week with her sister, Mrs. Pete Olson of Elsberry. H. H. Baarstad transacted business in Rolla Monday. Mr. and Mrs. J. Jarvis and son visited at the H. Gailfus transacted business in Cando Tuesday last week. A number of friends of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Galloway surprised them Monday night it being Mr. and Mrs. Galloway’s tenth wedding anniversary. They were given a shower of tinware.
