Hans was baptized January 22, 1854 at Nes, Akershus, Norway and was confirmed at same on October 4, 1869. The Nes parish is located northeast of Oslo, Norway. Hans was first married to Oline Maria Kristansdatter also known as Olena Haugen. Olena was born November 7, 1852 to Kristian Nilsen Ronnaltangen and Ase Marie Olsdatter Barhaug and died March 26, 1874 (all at Akershus, Norway) after the birth of their son, Ole Christian Hanson. The son Ole was raised by his grandparents, Anders and Caroline Wong who are believed to have emigrated to the St Ansgar, Iowa area. Hans next married Gina Jacobsdatter on February 3, 1878 at Nes, Akershus Norway and they had three children, Inga, Annie and Peter. Believe Hans emigrated in 1883 to St Ansgar, Mitchell, IA and worked for Myrtle Lee Anderson's grandparents for a year to earn enough money to send for his wife and children in Norway. In the spring of 1884, Gina and their three children traveled by boat to America and traveled to Mitchell Co, Iowa to settle on a farm Hans had rented near Meltonville in Newburg township. Meltonville was a village northwest of Carpenter, Iowa, gone now but for a few foundations in a farm field. Selma, the youngest daughter, was born in N.D. so altogether, Hans and Gina had ten children. The family spoke the Norwegian language although the children learned to read and write English. After moving to North Dakota, they helped organize and build Our Savior's Lutheran Church and are buried in the cemetery of that church which sat across the road from the farm they homesteaded. Hans also helped build the Zion Lutheran Church in Palermo, North Dakota. (Our Savior's Lutheran is still standing and is taken care of by descendants of Hans although it doesn't hold church services.) Family found in the 1900 census living at Township 159, Ward, North Dakota; says Hans emigrated 1883, Gina 1884 with Peder 1884. Hans died October 11, 1907 at Baden, Ward, N.D. in a horse and wagon incident while crossing a railroad track. He was returning home after working at a coal mine near Kenmare, ND and fell off his wagon and was run over by it. The Minot, North Dakota newspaper headlines declared it an accident, not foul play. He is buried at the Our Savior's Cemetery, Spencer, Ward, North Dakota. Additional Comments: Censuses transcribed as found, obvious spelling errors not corrected. Either Andersen or Anderson is correct although Andersen was more often found.
