C. Poynter, father of Governor Poynter, died at Albion, Neb., yesterday morning at 7 o'clock. The deceased had been ill for several months, growing suddenly worse last Thursday, when the governor left the city to be at his father's bedside. Mr. Poynter was born in Barren county, Kentucky, in 1821, removing to Illinois in 1835. In 1840 he was married to Huldah Watkins, who survives him. Three sons were born to thee couple. The eldest died at the age of twelve years in 1885. The second son is the governor of the state, while the third, D. J. Poynter, lives in Albion, being the editor of a paper at that place. The father and mother have made their home with him for six years. For many years Mr. Poynter was a minister of the Christian faith. He was a man of great force of character and exceptional intelligence. His private life was always in full accord with his public teaching. He devoted much of his time and energies to the cause of education, assisting in both ways in the development of Eureka college. He was a pioneer settler in Woodford county, Ill., and during their lives, was associated with Lincoln, David Davis, Adlai Stevenson and others. The funeral was held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the Methodist Episcopal church at Albion. The services were conducted by Elder Lemon, assisted by H. A. Houtz. The interment was at Rose Hill cemetery, a short distance from Albion. Governor Poynter's family left the city yesterday afternoon at 1:45 and were present at the funeral today.
