He was married to Miss Bethia E. Court, August 14th, 1862, to which union were born eight children, three of whom died in infancy. Brother Johnson was always an enthusiastic and faithful Christian. Though actively engaged in business life, he spent much time preaching to the poor, in asylums and prisons and in regular church work. At that time he was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist church of England. In 1873 he crossed the ocean and after spending two or three years in Canada, the family cam to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he was ordained and entered the work of the ministry, under the Methodist Episcopal Conference. He preached at Lincoln, Beatrice, Friendville, and Glencoe. About the year '85 Rev. Johnson moved to northern Holt county, where he preached under direction of the Congregational church, for four years, then moved across the river into Boyd county, took a homestead seven miles west of Butte and preached at McCully school house for two years, when the accident befell him which has left him helpless for the past twenty-three years. The began the weary watching, which none thought would be long. Brother and Sister Johnson moved to Deadwood to be near a daughter, but later on the children purchased them a home in Butte, and this has been and is still their home. While at Deadwood Brother Johnson again united with the Methodist church and was transferred to the Butte charge where he has been held in love and cherished. Those who live to mourn his death are Mrs. Bethia E. Johnson, the devoted wife, Mrs. H. O. Bennett, Deadwood, S. D., Mrs. Anna Stearns, of Holt County, Mrs. Sadie A. Davis, White Sulphur Springs, Montana, Samuel W. Johnson, Carter S. D. and Walter S. Johnson of Butte. The Gazette joins with the church and community in extending to the bereaved family its truest sympathy. ------------- Thanks For the kindness shown us during the protracted illness of our beloved husband and father, and for the aid and sympathy extended us at the time of his death and burial, we most heartily thank our many friends and neighbors.
