Carpenter, 67, of Kearney, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Hospital. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the O’Brien - Straatmann Funeral Home in Kearney with the Rev. Gary Main officiating.  There will be no visitation.  She was born Nov. 30, 1941 in Omaha to Earl and Edna (Pilster) Rhode.  Her father died shortly before her birth, and when she was four, her mother married Thomas C. Walters, who adopted her and raised her as his only child.  On Nov. 26, 1960, she married Walter W. Carpenter, a marriage which lasted 35 years.  Survivors include two sons, Waco Wayne of Kearney and Shad Scott of Johnson Lake.  Additional survivors include three grandsons, Wryan, Elijah and Trey, and step-granddaughter, Misean; great-grandson Maximillian and great-granddaughter Savannah; very special friend Melvina Mattley, all of Kearney; and her companion of eight years, Scooter. She grew up in Albion, moving to Valentine in 1958 and graduated from high school there.  She attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for one year before marrying, and raised her children in Valentine until 1973, when the family moved to Kearney.  She attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney, receiving her bachelor of arts in education in 1975 and her masters of science in counseling in 1977.  In 1975 she joined the faculty of UNK as director of the learning center and tutor program coordinator and served on the Faculty Senate and many other campus organizations and committees.  In 1985, she received her Ph.D. in postsecondary education from the University of Nebraska Lincoln and attained the rank of full professor.  She lived at Johnson Lake from 1985 to 1995, commuting to teach, and was treasurer of the local school board before returning to live in Kearney.  She was a life-long member of the Methodist Church. She was very active in her international professional organization, the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), organizing and serving as first president of the Heartland Regional Chapter in 1987, treasurer of the national organization from 1990-92, chair of the national conference in 1996 and national president in 1997.  In 2001, she was inducted as a Fellow of Learning Assistance (one of only 12), elected by her peers. She retired from teaching in 2001 and traveled extensively in her RV, including a three-month tour of western Canada and Alaska.  She joined Loner on Wheels (LoW), an international group for single RVers, and served as national vice-president of the organization from 2005-2008.  She enjoyed gardening, her plants, reading and Nebraska football.
