Riggs, 88, of Elm Creek, died Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at First Christian Church in Elm Creek. The Rev. Tom Swartley will officiate. Interment will be in the Elm Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at O’Brien-Straatmann Chapel in Elm Creek and one hour prior to service time at the church. Survivors include his wife, Maude of Elm Creek; son Clyde William “Bill” Riggs of Elm Creek; daughter, Kathryn Marie (Ernie) Tropp of Loomis; three grandchildren, Clayton (Kira) Tropp of Grand Island, Gayle Tropp of Sidney and April Riggs of Elm Creek, two great-grandsons, Holden and Hunter Tropp of Grand Island; brother, Robert (Mozel) Riggs of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters, Helen Johnson of Dexter, Kan., Doris Ball of Arkansas City, Kan., Lucille Doolittle of Norwich, Kan., and Harriett (Lee) Thompson of Azle, Texas. Other survivors include brother-in-law, Les Jones and wife, Celia of Dayton, Ohio; sisters-in- law, Lula (Reed) Cepel and husband, Harold of Gibbon, Virginia McCoskey and husband, Robert of Wichita, Kan., Gilmer Nellis Ruth Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., and many nieces and nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Marissa Marie Tropp; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Riggs; sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Paul Kincheloe; sisters-in-law Peggy Nellis and Gladys Jones and brothers-in-law, Lee Johnson, Johnny Doolittle, Walter Ball, Virgil Reed, Elmer Jones and Melvin Williams. He was born on July 22, 1920 in Burden, Kan., to Oscar Otto and Bessie May (Fell) Riggs. He grew up in southeast Kansas and received his education in Dexter, Kan. He was united in marriage to Maude Marie Jones on May 18, 1947 in Winfield, Kan. After which the couple lived in Neodesha, Kan., Elm Creek and Loomis where he was employed by W. J. Small, ADM & Consolidated Blenders alfalfa dehydrators. Later Penn Life Insurance employed him. He was a member of First Christian Church in Elm Creek where he served as a deacon, elder, board member and Sunday school superintendent, Kearney Elks Lodge, and the Parkinson’s Support Group of Kearney. He was a retired member of the Elm Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He served many years on school boards in Elm Creek and Loomis. In Loomis he was on the Village Board and served as mayor.
