Mr. Ross a man about 70 years of age, and his son-in-law, a Mr. Mason, reside on adjoining farms. Considerable bad feeling between the two has existed for some time on account of depredations committed by the stock of Ross upon the crops of Mason. On Sunday last, some horses belonging to the former, broke into the fields of the latter, and were taken up by Mason and put into his stable. On Monday morning, Ross missing his team, came upon Mason's place to look for them. Mason refused to give them up until the damages were paid and guarantee given for the protection of his crops. After some quarreling Ross went home as he said, for his gun, and returned to take them by force. Mason also armed himself, and went out to the stable. Ross attempted to force an entrance, clubbed his gun and struck Mason several times, and then drew up his weapon as if about to shoot. Mason immediately aimed at his legs with the intention of crippling him and preventing injury to himself, and fired. The ball took effect in the groin of the old man, and inflicted a mortal wound. The shooting occurred at 9, o'clock A.M., and Ross lived until 1:30 P.M. It is said by those in attendance, that Ross exonerated Mason from all blame in the matter before his death. We learn these particulars from Mr. H. Atkinson, who resides in the neighborhood.
