OROVILLE, Calif. - Eugene J. Abts, 83, Oroville, Calif., died May 27, 
1999, at his home.

A visitation was held in Oroville, Calif., June 1.

A graveside service will be held June 5, at St Jane Frances de Chantal 
Catholic Cemetery, Randolph, with Fr. Ron Battiato officiating.

Dr. Abts was born March 4, 1916, in Randolph. He lived in Randolph 
until college when he moved to Omaha to attend Creighton University. 
He graduated from medical school in 1940 and completed his internship 
in 1941.

During WWII, Dr. Abts served in the Navy Medical Corp from 1941-1945 
primarily being stationed in the South Pacific. His assignments 
included a duty as the ship's doctor on the USS Maurey. Upon 
retirement, Dr. Abts had earned the rank of Commander. After a short 
time practicing medicine with his cousin, Dr. Frank Abts, in Yankton, 
S.D., he moved to Oroville in 1947, where he remained in private 
practice until retiring in 1986. During his years in Oroville, Dr. 
Abts was active in the Butte-Glen Medical Society, co-founder of the 
Oroville Medical Center Hospital, co-founder of the golf course, 
Director of the Hospital laboratory, Grand Knight in the Knights of 
Columbus and earned a lifetime membership in the Elks Lodge.

In his earlier years, he enjoyed duck and pheasant hunting and always 
spoke highly of the pheasant hunting in Nebraska. He remained an avid 
reader and always kept abreast of the sporting activities.

He is survived by his wife, June, Oroville, Calif; his children, Dr. 
Tom Abts, San Diego, Calif.; Suzanne Palm, Montclair, Va.; Sandra Clark, 
Modesto, Calif.; and 7 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, 
Dr. Dorothy Mohler, Omaha; and brother, Verne Abts, Hartington.

He is preceeded in death by his parents, Anton J. and Christina Abts; 
and brothers John Abts, Albert Abts, Dr. Arthur Abts and Thomas Abts.
