JAKE BACKMAN DIES SATURDAY AM MOTHER OF TWO CHILDREN SUCCUMBS TO CANCER Sorrow was felt by dozens of people in Cedar County, particulary for the Hartington and Wynot communities with the death of Mrs. Jake Backman at 6 o'clock Saturday morning at her home in Hartington. Mrs. Backman is the mother of two small children, suffered for many months with cancer although her family and friends administered to her constantly to make her illness more bearable. Respect for this woman who had made a good home for her husband and children for the past 16 years given by her relatives, friends and acquaintances who attended the services at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington at 9:00 Monday morning. Solemn Requiem high mass was celebrated by Rev. B.H. Lorsman assisted by R.F.P. Irechek and Rev. Anthony Birnack. Burial was in St. Michael's Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joe, Edward and Will Hesse, and E.H. Lewis and Barney Backman. Honorary Pallbearers were Mrs. Louis Burbach, Mrs. Joe Bolhind, Mrs. Johanna Becker, Mrs. P.H. Lammers, Mrs. Joe Leise and Mrs. Henry Happs. Mrs. Backman was born Theresa Agnes Hesse, daughter of Anton and Agnes Hesse, on May 24, 1897 near Bow Valley. She was 35 years old at the time of her death. Her early years were spent in rural life in Cedar county during which she developed a talent for homemaking and housekeeping. On September 4, 1917 she was married to Jake Backman at St. Peter and Paul church in Bow Valley. They lived at St. James for several years, where they farmed. About four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Backman moved to Hartington where he built one of the most attractive homes in the city. Mrs. Backman's life was marked by her religious devotion, and she was an active member of the Holy Trinity parish while in Hartington. She also belonged to the Christian Mothers society. In her quiet unassuming way Mrs. Backman was one of the most helpful women in the community. She was quick to give assistance in times of sickness or emergency and she made numerous friends by her sincere neighborly spirit. About her home she was also efficient and motherly, and diversified her work by considerable time devoted to gardening. In addition to the widower, one son, Dennis, 14, and one daughter, Darlene 6, are surviving. There are also six brothers, Arnold, Hot Springs. SD., John, Chicago, Ill, Anton, Winner, SD., William Colome, SD., Judge E.W. Hesse, Hartington, Joseph Hesse, Bow Valley and six sisters, Anna Hook and Elizabeth Bogner, Oelrich SD., Bernadine Fernholz, Emmet, Rose Boeckman, St. Helena, Mary Reuter, Hartington and Kathryn Reuter, Bow Valley. Miss Josephine Backman, sister of the widower will make her home with him to take care of the children.
