BERGMAN, OBERT PIONEER, DIES ON MONDAY ---------- WAS A RESIDENT OF AMES CREEK NEAR OBERT OVER 50 YEARS ---------- Ill for Several Weeks ---------- Mrs. Bergman Leaves Eight Children, 38 Grandchildren And Seven Grand Children ---------- This community was shocked and grieved Monday afternoon to hear that Mrs. Catherine Bergman, a resident of Cedar county for over a half century passed away here at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.M. Hirschman at two o'clock Monday afternoon, March 19th [1929]. Mrs. Bergman has been confined to her bed at the A.M. Hirschman home for the past five weeks and suffered much physical pain before her death. Her death came from infirmaties of old age for Mrs. Bergman had been in failing health for the past several months. Last November she left her old home at Ames Creek near Obert and came to Hartington to visit her daughter, Mrs. Hirschman. All during the winter, Mrs. Bergman has been gradually faiing, but she bore her sufferings with remarkable patience and passed away with a number of her children at her bedside, fully prepared to meet her Creator, in whom she had much faith and love. Mrs. Catherine Satorius Bergman was born in Germany 78 years ago. There she grew to girlhood and, it was there that she was united in marriage to Phillip Bergman. Shortly after their marriage the young couple immigrated to America, coming directly to Brookies Bottom. They lived there a short time and then moved to a farm at Ames Creek, the farm being located two and one half miles north of Obert. There they established a fine home and reared 10 children - eight of whom are now living. Sorrow came to the Bergman home when about 38 years ago last September, the husband and father of the household, Phillip Bergman, was called to his reward, leaving his young wife and family of 10 children, the youngest child, Phillipine, now Mrs. P. Pearson of Hartington, being only one month old. However, the young widow, the late Mrs. Bergman, carried on and through tireless labor and her unceasing faith and perservance, reared the fine family of children and kept them together. Until several months ago, Mrs. Bergman has been living on the old home place near Obert, the farm including many acres of good farm land. The late Mrs. Catherine Bergman was a devoted member of the St. James Catholic church and a fine mother and kind friend and associate. She was not only loved and respect by all her friends and neighbors but she was especially loved by the children. Funeral services for the late Mrs. Bergman will be held this morning at 10:30 at the St. James Catholic church and interment will be made in the cemetery there. The body, prior to the funeral, was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.M. Hirschman, of this city. Mrs. Catherine Bergman leaves to mourn her departure eight children: Mrs. Kate Satorius of Brookies Bottom; Mrs. A.M. Hirschman of this city; Henry Bergman of Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs. Ed Kuehn of Crofton; Mrs. Steve Asbre of Ames creek; Mrs. Joe Asbre of Hartington; Jos. Bergman of East Bow and Mrs. P. Pearson of near Hartingotn. Mrs. Barbara Reifenrath passed away about 24 years ago and Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson passed away about six years ago. She also leaves 38 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The family will have the sympathy of many freinds in the county in their bereavement. MARCH 1929 Cedar County News MRS. BERGMAN DIES AT DAUGHTER'S HOME ---------- ONE OF THE FIRST WOMEN TO COME TO COUNTY PASSED AWAY ---------- Mrs. Katherine Bergman, who came to Cedar county about 60 years ago, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.M. Hirschman, in Hartington Monday afternoon after a lingering illness of several weeks. Early that morning she said that she would not live the day out. Mrs. Bergman was 76 years old March 6th. The last winter was the first one she had spent away from her home on Ames Creek for 60 years. Mrs. Bergman was born in Germany, where she was married. As a bride of two years, she came to America when she was 18 years old. She and her husband went to Omaha where they took a boat up the Missouri to Cedar County where they settled on a homestead. The first winter, they lived at the home of a relative, Peter Satorius. In the spring, Mr. and Mrs. Bergman and baby daughter began housekeeping in the log structure in which Henry Lock had been murdered by Jim Jimeson, who was later hung at St. Helena. When Mrs. Bergman went to look at her new home the axe which had beeen used in the murder and the empty wine glasses from which the men had drunk were on the table. Being industrious, Mrs. Bergman began planning to furnish her house in a better condition than was usually found in the bachelor homes along Ames Creek. She and her two oldest daughters when they were old enough to, picked black walnuts, which were plentiful there. From the sale of the walnuts, Mrs. Bergman bot her furniture. Meanwhile, Mr. Bergman was busy extending the original homestead until at one time he owned about 900 acres of good land. When the youngest child was only four weeks old, Mr. Bergman died, and Mrs. Bergman was left with the large farm to manage so that it would bring a living and schooling for her babies. This she did, altho the accomplishment brot her many hardships which women and even men today do not encounter. Mrs. Bergman is survived by eight children, Mrs. Chris Satorius of Obert, Mrs. A.M. Hirshcman of Hartington, Mrs. Ed Kuehn of Crofton, Henry Bergman of Sioux City, Mrs. Steve and Mrs. Joe Asbre of Ames creek, Joseph Bergman of East Bow, and Mrs. Ben Pierson of near Obert. Funeral services were held this morning at 10:30 at St. James church, which she formerly attended with Rev. Father Mienzer of Wynot celebrating high mass. Burial was in the St. James cemetery with six of her grandsons acting as pallbearers. MARCH 1929 CEDAR COUNTY NEWS
