"Johnny" Johnson, Newcastle, 80, died Oct. 2, 1999, at a Sioux City hospital. Services were Oct. 5 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Newcastle, with the Rev. James Bartak officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery, Newcastle, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 62, Newcastle. Mr. Johnson was born Feb. 27, 1919, to Gerhard and Alma (Nygaard) Johnson at Maskell. He grew up in Maskell and farmed there until retiring to Newcastle in 1990. He served with the United States Army during World War II. He married Mary C. Sullivan on June 11, 1953 in Ponca. She died March 11, 1993, in Newcastle. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. He was a member of the Association of Fur Trappers. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 62. Survivors include two sons, Kevin and Pam, Savage, Minn., and Brian, Denver; three daughters, Beverly and Robert Calvert, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; Carol and Doug Danielson, St. Joseph, Minn.; Norma Johnson, Silver Spring, Md.; three sisters, Ruth and Roland Kathol, Des Moines, Iowa; Maurine and Kirk Estes, Bartlesville, Okla.; and Marilyn Arsi, Oxnard, Calif.; and eight grandchildren, Christopher and Shari Johnson; Rhonda, LeAnne and Bobby Calvert; and Gerad, Stephen and Matthew Danielson.
