Neuhalfen, LUTCF, 69, Hartington, died July 5, 1999, at his residence. Funeral services were held July 8, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, with Rev. William Sanderson officiating. Burial was in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Hartington. Military services were conducted by Hartington VFW Post #5283. Pallbearers were Dan Kuchta, Jack Hausmann, John Prosser, Arnie Topf, Joe Jannsen and Ron Rapp. Honorary pallbearers were Merlin Wiedenfeld, Gerry Hoffart, Gary Bowers, Tony Kamphaus, Patrick Jacques, Larry Swanson, Marv Becker, and Thomas McCoy. Vern was born March 27, 1930, to Anthony J. and Veronica E. (Grubbels) Neuhalfen in Hartington. He graduated from St. Francis High School, Randolph, in 1948. He worked for several farmers after graduation before entering the U.S. Navy from July 11, 1951 to July 1, 1955. He married Phyllis Marie McCoy Aug. 25, 1952, in Hartington. Vern worked for John Neu at the Hartington Creamery and also at the Hartington Feed and Chick. He joined New York Life Insurance in August 1971 as an underwriter. He had been with New York Life for 28 years. Vern has lived in the Hartington area all his life. He was a member of the City of Hartington Planning Commission; Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The Parish Council and school board; Perpetual Adoration at Holy Trinity Church for 36 years; a member of Cedar Catholic Alumni Booster Club; Honorary FFA Advisory Board, 1969; 4-H Leader; coached Junior League Basketball; Lifetime member of Hartington VFW Post # 5283; and past president of Lewis and Clark Life Underwriters Association. He was also an avid golfer. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, Hartington; fourteen children and their spouses: Mike and Sharon Neuhalfen, Arlington; Chuck and Susan Neuhalfen, Hartington; Jan and Mike Miller, Jewel. Iowa; Dr Elizabeth “Beth” Neuhalfen, Puyallup, Wash.; Bob and Maggie Neuhalfen, Ogallala; Don and Kim Neuhalfen, Lincoln; Jeff and Cathy Neuhalfen, Livona, Mich. Ken and Kathy Neuhalfen, Laurel; Phil and Kamie Neuhalfen, Norfolk; Tom and Becky Neuhalfen, Norfolk; Mary and Rod Colfax, O’Neill; Paulette and Brian Theisen, Norfolk; John Neuhalfen, Columbus; and Pat Neuhalfen, Columbia, Mo.; 24 grandchildren; eight brothers and sisters, Sister Celine Neuhalfen, O.S.F., Milwaukee, Wis.; Daniel Neuhalfen, Croften; Carol Cerny, St. Marys, Kan.; Alice Prosser, Ramer, Ala.; William Neuhalfen, Cedar Lake, Ind.; Jerome Neuhalfen, Council Bluffs, Iowa; Vincent Neuhalfen, Del Rio, Texas; and Edna Molina, Del Rio, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orville and Roy; and two grandchildren. Memorials preferred to Cedar Catholic or Holy Trinity Endowment funds.
