This file was contributed for use in the NEGenWeb Archives by Carol Tramp February 2002 ====================================================================== WYNOT TRIBUNE JUNE 30, 1938 JOHN NOECKER DIES AT YANKTON JUNE 23 BOW VALLEY PIONEER, 78, SUCCUMBS AFTER LONG ILLNESS John Noecker, 78, a Cedar county resident since 1871 and a revered member of the News Golden Circle of Cedar County Pioneers passed away Thursday afternoon at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Yanton after eight months illness with heart trouble and complications. He had Been in the Yankton hospital three weeks. Funeral services, attended by a large crowd of acquaintances from all parts of the county were held at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bow Valley Monday morning with Rev. A. Birnbach officiating. Pallbearers were Joe Fernholtz, John Wortmann, Joe Hesse, John A. Thoene, George Reuter and Alphonse Rameil. Out of town relatives at the funeral included Joe Fernotz of O'Neil, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Peitz of Wisner, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pinkelman, Mrs. Herman Marx and Matt Gubbels all of Randolph. Burial was in the Bow Valley Cemetery. Mr. Noecker was born Nov. 25, 1859 at WEstphalia, Germany, the son of John and Josephine Noecker, When he was 13 years old he came to America and to Cedar County with his father and brother, settling on a farm northwest of Wynot on which the family homesteaded for 48 years. In 1923 Mr Noecker moved to Bow Valley where he had an acre orchard. On Nov. 15, 1887 he married Miss Mary Pinkelman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Pinkelman who died in 1894. Mr. Noecker married Miss Theresa Peitz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Peitz, April 28, 1896. Both ceremonies were held at the Bow Valley Church. Mr. Noecker served as county comissioner from Jan 4, 1900, to Jan. 3, 1906 after having fitted himself for public life with 11 years of experience as assessor. While commissioner, he supported the first audit of books of county officials. The check-up showed that Tom Ziegler was $23,000 short, the entire amount being recovered in spot cash with interest as well as $9000 from other officers. He was a bondsman, with nine other men, for one county officer and the ten had to make up the deficiency in his account. Incidents surrounding the audit comprised one of the most exciting times in the history of county politics. The newly-elected county treasurer refused to take office until the books had been corrected and in the meantime ten schools had to close because funds were short. Mr. Noecker was a school director 25 years and held every office in the Bow Valley German Mutual Insurance company at one time or another. He was a member and one of the organizers of the catholic Knights in Bow Valley and also of the Bow Valley Schuetzenverein. Survivors include five children by his second marriage-- Miss Martha at home, Mrs. Anthony Stevens, Anton and August of Bow Valley and Paul A. of St. James. Twenty-six grandchildren, also survive as well as four sisters, Mrs. Theresa Wortman, Mrs. Anna Peitz, Mrs. Elizabeth Thoene and Mrs. John Rameil all of Bow Valley. Mr. Noecker's second wife died June 30, 1930. NOTE: THE WYNOT TRIBUNE CEASED OPERATIONS IN THE LATE 1930s.
