Mrs. Peck was stricken with a heart attack on Monday, from which, she partially recovered, but only for a time, as she became worse, and while her condition was not favorable, her passing was unexpected and came as a shock to her family. Julia Wohlman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Wohlman, first saw the light on April 18, 1856, at Milwaukee, Wisconsin and departed this life in her home in COleridge, March 17, 1932 at the ripe age of 75 years, 10 months and 29 days. Mrs. Peck was the last member of her famiy. She came with her parents to Cedar county in the year 1872, thus was familiar with hardships and history of pioneer life in the county. At Vermillion, SD on November 4, 1875, she was united in marriage to Henry Merrick, who died December 3, 1877. This union was blessed with two daughters: Sarah, Mrs. Frank Specht, and Mary, Mrs. Elmer Miller, who passed away in 1918 in Texas. She was married to Nelson Peck on January 10, 1881, and to them were born six children: four sons and a daughter; one child dying in infancy and Stephen, the second son passed on in 1907. For a little more than half a century, they traveled together down the pathway of life. Mrs. Peck was a devoted mother, giving unstintedly of her time and strength to her home and family. She had failed noticeably since the demise of her husband on February 1, 1931. No doubt, she felt, after caring for her aged companion through his last illness, that her work was almost finished--life didn't mean as much to her. Mr. and Mrs. Peck retired from farm life and moved to Coleridge March 1, 1910, and enjoyed as a compensation for their years of labor, a well-earned rest. surviving her are: three sons, Truman of Geddes SD, Eugene of Coleridge, and Henry of Hartington, and two daughters, Mrs. Frank Specht of Coleridge and Mrs. Forrest McMann of Saskatchewan, Canada, also three stepchildren: Mrs. A.L. Jones of Geddes SD, Herman and Fred of Steel, SD., besides several grandchildren, great grandchildren and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Congregational church and Rev. McKeen assisted by Rev. Rowden, officiated, speaking from the text: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone; but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit." The pallbearers were: Chas Fleener, Anton Brodersen, John Bauer, Frank Hirschman, Anthony Hirschman, and Henry Hirschman--all old friends, or at one time, neighbors of the deceased. The friendship of the Hirschman families and Mrs. Peck's folks has extended down through the years. They came together to this country from Germany and settled in Wisconsin, later all came to Cedar county and located. Friendship that is cherished and nurtured goes on and on, strengthening as time passes. Burail was made in the family lot in the Hartington Cemetery. Relatives from a distance who came to attend the funeral were: Mr. & Mrs. Truman Peck and Mrs. A.L. Jones of Geddes SD and Miss Lucy Peck, a granddaughter of Omaha. 17 MARCH 1932 CEDAR COUNTY NEWS
