Othmar C. Steffen

FORDYCE- Othmar C. Steffen, 86, died Feb. 23, 2000, at Avera Sister 
James Nursing Home, Yankton, S.D.

Visitation was Feb. 25 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.  A vigil 
service was held later that evening at St. John the Baptist Catholic 
Church, Fordyce.

Mass of Christian Burial was Feb. 26 at St. John the Baptist Catholic 
Church with Rev. Greg Benkowski officiating.

Burial was in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Randy Steffen, Don Schulte, Scott Kollars, Brian 
Steffen, Mike Schulte, Ron Steffen, Adam Steffen and Jake Lammers.

Othmar was born March 15, 1913, to Theodore and Christina (Welchert) 
Steffen at Fordyce.  He was raised in the Fordyce area.  He married 
Anna Spenner Sept. 6, 1939, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, West Point.  
They lived on the Steffen home place where he farmed the land and did 
custom baling and silage cutting until the early 1970s.  He then 
started working for Hesse's Inc., a farm implement dealership in 
Crofton.  They retired and moved to Hartington in 1983.  Othmar and 
Ann have lived at Sister James Nursing Home since 1998.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Knights 
of Columbus, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the NFO and was also a 
member of Holy Trinity Parish, Hartington.  He was involved with the 
Hartington Senior Citizens Center where he volunteered many hours in 
the kitchen and delivered Meals-on-Wheels. Othmar spent many hours 
playing cards with neighbors, friends and relatives.

Survivors include his wife, Ann, Yankton, S.D.; eight children, Gerald 
(Mary Jean) Steffen, Crofton; Anna Marie Schulte, Yankton, S.D.; Agnes 
(Joe Dan) Plunk, Rowlette, Texas; Janet (Dale) Kollars, Phoenix.  Ariz.; 
Charles (Linda) Steffen, Crofton; Marvin (Marilyn) Steffen, Yankton, S.D.; 
Marilynn D. Steffen, Peoria, Ariz.; and Joan (Dan) Lammers, Yankton, S.D.; 
20 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five 
step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Ed Steffen, West Point: and sisters, 
Sister Loretta and Sister Presentia, both of Milwaukee, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Albert; sister, Sister
Leona; and a great-grandchild.
