Wirth, 80, Hartington, died March 4, 2000, at his home. A memorial service was held March 11 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, with Rev. Robert Neu officiating. Arlo was born July 25, 1919, in Dunbar. He graduated from Dunbar Public Schools in 1936. He then attended and graduated with high distinction in 1942 from the University of Nebraska-College of Agri-culture with a bachelor of science degree in agricultural economics. Arlo enlisted as a private in the U.S. Air Force in 1942 and separated as a major in 1946. During his time in the service, he served in Italy with the 15th Air Force. He married Anne Manchester Oct. 10, 1946. After working one year for the American Hereford Journal, Kansas City, Kan., in 1946, Arlo returned to Dunbar to farm for the next nine years. During this time, he was active in Farm Bureau, and the Soil Conservation, including development of Little Brownell Watershed. He moved to Hartington in 1956 and worked for Farmers National Company, then in seed and fertilizer sales. In 1962, he purchased a general property and casualty insurance agency which merged to become the Rossiter and Wirth Insurance Agency later the Wirth-Tideman Insurance Agency. Arlo retired from insurance in 1984. Arlo was instrumental in the formation of Northeast Community College in 1973 and served on the Board of Governors until 1997. During this time on the board, he served as chairman for the Board of Govemors, in addition to serving on college boards at the state and national levels. Arlo was awarded Honorary Membership to the Nebraska Community College Association and was the recipient of the first ever honorary associate of applied science degree from Northeast Community College in 1997. Some of Wirth's past professional affiliations include the Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation; Nebraska City Junior Chamber of Commerce; Otoe County Soil Conservation Board of Supervisors; Nebraska Association of Mutual Insurance Agents, member and Treasurer/Secretary; Nebraska Association of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers; Hartington Chamber of Commerce; Masonic Lodges of Coleridge and Yankton, S.D.; and the Hartington Board of Adjustments. Arlo was named the first Nebraska Outstanding Young Farmer by the Nebraska Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1953: Chairman of the Year by the Nebraska Association of Mutual Insurance Agents in 1970; received the Nebraska Association ofcommunity College Trustees - Governors Award in 1977; and received the Hartington Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1987. Arlo was a long-time active member of the Hartington Golf Club. He and his wife, Anne, were friends of the First Congregational U.C.C. in Hartington, and the Unitarian Church in Sioux City, Iowa. His hobbies included educational boards, family farm interests, reading and golf. Survivors include a son, Carl Wirth, Sioux City, Iowa; two grandsons, Kenneth and Douglas Wirth; four great-grandchildren; and a sister and her husband, Lois and John Davia, Homewood, Ill.
