Ankeny (PHOTO) HARTINGTON - Alverda G. Ankeny, 71, Hartington, died May 4, 2001, at Avera Sister James Nursing Home, Yankton, S.D. Visitation and a rosary were May 6 at Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. A Mass of Christian Burial was May 7 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Fordyce, with Rev. Greg Benkowski, Rev. Jerome Dickes and Msgr. Cyril Werner officiating. Burial was in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Fordyce. Pallbearers were Jim Kuehn, Pat Kuehn, Doug Stevens, Kevin Keiser, Dick Wiebelhaus and Gene Dickes. Alverda was born Aug. 9, 1929, to Nickie and Frances (Schroeder) Meyer in Menominee, graduating from Mount Marty High School in 1947 and from Sacred Heart School of Nursing, Yankton, S.D., in 1950. She worked as a registered nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital from 1950-1953. She married James B. Ankeny Aug. 26, 1953, in Menominee. They farmed west of Pleasant Valley from 1953-1965. She worked at Sacred Heart Hospital in 1965 and at Osmond General Hospital from 1965-1966. She then worked as an office nurse for Dr. Richard L. Tollefson from 1966-1991. Alverda was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Chruch, Fordyce, and the Ladies Guild; and was a member of the Christian Mothers. Survivors include her husband, James, Hartington; four children and their spouses, Kevin and Claudette Ankeny, Yankton, S.D.; Susan and Noel Corson, Gulfpot, Fla.; Joel Ankeny, Wayne; and Jill Ankeny, St. Petersburg, Fla.; six grandchildren, Randy, Aaron, and Marie Ankeny, Yankton, S.D.; Candice Ankeny, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Lucas and Micah Corson, Gulfport, Fla.; three brothers and their spouses, Melvin and Janice Meyer, La Vista; Delmar and Karen Meyer, Hartford, Wis.; and Dennis and Cardi Meyer, Tea, S.D.; three sisters and their spouses, Mary Ann Jansen, Crofton; Denelda and Darold Paulsen, Crofton; and Eileen and Dale List, Pierre, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Larry Meyer.
