Permission granted by: Rob Dump, Editor, Cedar County News ====================================================================== Cedar County News, June 28, 1951 Mike Bonertz Dies June 19th Former Resident Dies in California Wynot – Word has been received of the death of Mike Bonertz, 76, former Wynot resident and business man for many years, according to word received by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bender of St. Helena, from their daughter-in-law, Mrs. Francis Bonertz. Mr. Bonertz died June 19th at Los Angeles, Calif. He lived there with his son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Francis Bonertz. Mr. Bonertz was a native of Cedar County, having been born at St. Helena of pioneer parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Bonertz. As a young lad of 15 or 16, he started to learn the blacksmith trade and become one of the best blacksmiths in northeast Nebraska. He was married to Elnore Mires at St. Helena August 16, 1895. They lived in South Dakota for four years and then came to this community working at his trade in St. James. Later he moved to Wynot and continued at the blacksmith trade and was also in the implement business here for a time. During his residence here he was active in various civic organizations. He was a chairman of the first board of trustees after the town was incorporated, and was a member of the board for many years. After leaving Wynot in December of 1936 they lived at Ellensburg, Wash., for a year. They then moved to Los Angeles, where Mrs. Bonertz died in November of 1938. Mr. Bonertz is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Alrie Sell of Los Angeles; three sons, Francis of Los Angeles, Earl of Quincy, Wash., and Arnold of Texas. Five brothers; John, Joe, Louis and Anton Bonertz all of Canada, and Henry Bonertz of Fordyce. Three sisters, Mrs. Henry Thoene, of Wynot, Mrs. John Thoene of Hartington, and Mrs. Hubert Molitor of Lens., Wisc. One daughter preceded him in death and one brother Theodore was killed in a threshing accident years ago.
