Carl HARTINGTON- Donald L. Carl, 72, Hartington, died Dec. 9, 1999, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, S.D. Visitation Was Dec. 12 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. Mass of Christian Burial was Dec. 13 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, with Rev. William Sanderson officiating. Burial was held at Greenwood Cemetery, Wayne, with Military Services conducted by Hartington V.F.W. Post 5283. Pallbearers were Louis Herbolsheimer, Gerry Miller, Tom Tideman, Dave Konz, Jim Anderson and Scott Rath. Donald was born Aug. 20, 1927, to Clinton and Frances (Lord) Carl in Hampton. He married Joan Nuss Nov. 26, 1954, in Wayne. He moved to Sutton as a young child and graduated from Sutton High School in 1946. He enlisted in the Army and served most of his time in Japan as a radioman. After he was discharged he lived in Lincoln and then Wayne where he attended Wayne State College for 2 1/2 years and worked at the Gamble Store and the Ford garage. After Don and Joan were married, they moved to Hartington in 1956 and worked at the Ben Franklin Store. They bought the store from Joan's aunt, Helen Nuss, in 1975. At the present time the store is called D&J Variety. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Hartington Chamber Commerce and Hartington V.F.W. Post 5283. Survivors include his wife, Joan, Hartington; six sons and their wives, Terry Carl, Beatrice; Roger Carl, Lincoln; Danny and Jody Carl, Hartington; Mark and Kris Carl, Bennington; Tom Carl, Yankton, S.D.; and Lee Carl, Hartington; seven grandchildren; one greatgrandson; one brother, Clinton Carl, Tuckasegee, N.C.: two sisters, Mrs. Emil (Barbara) Vokoun, Hallam; and Annie George, Sutton.
