Carl (PHOTO) HARTINGTON - Joan L. Carl, 69, died May 1, 2001, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, S.D. Visitation was May 3 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. Mass of Christian Burial was May 4 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, with Rev. William Sanderson officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Wayne. Pallbearers were Scott Rath, Jim Anderson, Dave Konz, Jason Carl, Luke Carl and Roy Carl. Joan was born Aug. 2, 1931, to Carl G. and Lillian G. (Hayne) Nuss in Wayne. She married Donald Lee Carl Nov. 26, 1954, in Wayne. He died Dec. 9, 1999, at the age of 72. Joan grew up in Wayne and graduated from Wayne Prep in 1948 and from Wayne State College in 1952. She and Don moved to Hartington in 1956 so Don could work at the Ben Franklin Store. In 1975, Joan and Don purchased the store from Joan's aunt, Helen Nuss. She continued to work at the store, now called D&J Variety, until her retirement. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington; a member of the Hartington VFW Auxiliary Post #5283 and a member of several bridge clubs for many years. Survivors include six sons and their spouses, Terry Carl, Beatrice; Roger Carl, Lincoln; Danny and Jody Carl, Hartington; Mark and Kris Carl, Bennington; Tom Carl, Yankton, S.D.; and Lee Carl, Hartington; eight grandchildren, two great-grandsons; two brothers and spouse, Jean and Donna Nuss, Wayne; and Joe Nuss, Bodga, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a daughter, Jill.
