This file was contributed for use in the NEGenWeb Archives by Carol Tramp Permission granted by: Rob Dump, Editor, Cedar County News ====================================================================== CEDAR COUNTY NEWS FEB. 25, 1943 LAST RITES HELD FOR PIONEER WYNOT MAN ROY CHAMBERLAIN HAD BEEN RESIDENT OF COUNTY FOR 66 YEARS Wynot - Funeral services were held here Monday afternoon for Roy Chamberlain, Cedar county resident for over 66 years, who died at Yankton Hospital Saturday evening after several years of ill health. Mr. Chamberlain was taken to the hospital about two weeks ago. Rev. F.A. Jackson officiated at the services in the Methodist Church. Pallbearers were John Goodwin, Merrit Smith, E.T. Ardnt, G.A. Snowe, A.W. Jones, and Oscar Olson. Burial was in the family lot in the Wynot Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home. Roy Chamberlain was born near Belle Plain, Ia., February 24, 1875. Had he lived until Wednesday of this week he would have been 68 years of age. When about six months old he came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Chamberlain, to Cedar County settling near St. James. It was as a youth that he began digging wells, a business which he followed for 46 years. During his youth he also operated a threshing machine for over 20 years In September 1941 he retired from active work owing ill health. He had drilled between 600 and 700 wells. Mr. Chamberlain and Miss Lulu Clausen were married at Hartington by Judge Plumleigh June 3, 1899. He was the father of seven children, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. Elsie Coffey of Jamestown, LA., Alona, Stanley and Mrs. Letha Franciso, Tacoma, Wash., Raymond in Oregon, and Francis and Mrs. Dorothy Maywood in Nebraska. Also one brother, Jess of Bloomfield, NE., and a sister, Mrs. Ida Wherry of Yankton survive. Among relatives and friends attending the funeral from a distance were Mrs. Arthur Wherry, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Wherry, and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Chamberlain and family all of Yankton. Jess Chamberlain of Bloomfield and Mrs. Tress Ferber of Vermillion.
