Collins, Wynot Pioneer Dies in Sioux City Hospital J.V. Collins, 67, early settler of Cedar County in the Wynot Community, died in a Sioux City Hospital Sunday morning following an operation Wednesday. He failed to rally despite a blood transfusion given Thursday, the blood being taken from Harold Laharty, a grandson. Mr. Collins had been in poor health for several months. The body was brought from Sioux city to Wynot Monday where funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Church. Rev. E.T. Antrim, of Plainview, a former pastor at Wynot officiated. Members of the Wynot IOOF lodge of which Mr. Collins was a member had charge of services at the grave. Burial was in the family lot in the Wynot cemetery. Mr. Collins was born at Valley Falls, Conn. February 14, 1866, and came with his parents to Dakota territory in 1872. In December 1875, when he was only nine years old, he came to Cedar county and has been a resident of the county for 58 years. He owned the same home in St. James since he was 17 years old, having traded a bunch of cattle for the property. On June 29th, 1886, Mr. Collins and Elizabeth Cullen were married at Bow Valley Church with Rev. Fr. Uhing officiating. To this union six children were born all in the old family home at St. James. One son Arthur died in 1920. Mr. and Mrs. Collins took up a homestead in Lyman County, SD in 1902, although they still kept up their home in St. James. They traveled from Cedar County to Dakota in a covered wagon taking 18 head of cattle with them and were on the road 10 days. Mr. Collins was one of the early day schoolteachers having taught at Ames Creek and at the Whitthouse school. He was also one of the pioneer painters and paperhangers of this vicinity. Surviving are his wife and five of his children, Lewis of Rapid City, SD, Martin and Floyd of Silver City, SD., Mrs. Kate Laharty, Wynot and Mrs. Marie Fisher of Sioux City. There are also eight grandchildren.
