This file was contributed for use in the NEGenWeb Archives by Carol Tramp ====================================================================== Hartington Herald August 8, 1913 Death of Old Soldier Aaron Bartlett Harris sacred veteran of many battles and who was one of the gallant company who marched with Sherman to the sea is dead. Aaron Harris scarred veteran upright citizen, devoted husband father. Aaron Harris was born May 10, 1848 in the state of Ohio and died in this community Monday morning August 4, 1913. Although the deceased had been in poor health for a number of months, he was not afflicted with any acute disease and his last illness was of very short duration. Not over half an hour elapsed between the time he had taken sick and his death. When yet a boy, Mr. Harris moved with his parents to Iowa and when the war broke out he enlisted and became a member of the cavalry. He served all through this war and was with Sherman when he marched to the sea. At the end of the war, he was discharged, but later enlisted and was sent to Fort Sully, SD., It was there he met his future wife, Mary Ann Goodwin. They were married in the early seventies and shortly moved to Butler Co. NE and then to Cedar Co. where they have made their home for the past 25 years. The late Mr. Harris leaves a wife and five children. Mrs.Thomas Barker and Mrs. Sam Schager, Mrs. Louis Lauritsen and Henry and Minor Harris. Also one sister, Mrs. Clark Cooper of York, NE. Those relatives were present at the funeral. The funeral of the late Aaron Harris was held at Wynot at 2 O’clock pm and was one of the largest which had ever been held in the county. The services were held at the Methodist Church and were impressive. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. The following old soldiers acted as pallbearers; W.H. Stephenson, R.R. Eby, W.H. Rowell, G.S. Franks, Jas Winterringer and Wm. Winterringer. Interment was made in the Wynot Cemetery. A nephew of the late Mr. Harris of Gordon, Jas. Harris was also present at the funeral. The bereaved family circle will have the sympathy of many friends in their great loss.
