JAMES- Anthony "Tony" Koch, 71, died April 2, 2000, at his residence. Visitation was April 4 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. A vigil service was held later that evening at Sts. Philip and James Catholic Church, St. James. Mass of Christian Burial will be April 5 at 10:30 a.m., at Sts. Philip and James Catholic Church with Rev. Jay Kruse officiating. Burial will be in Sts. Philip and James Cemetery, St. James, with military services conducted by Wynot American Legion Post #31. Pallbearers will be Nathan Koch, Haley Wohlman, Brady Koch, Jason Koch, Karissa Koch, Ryan Koch, Michael Sorenson and Brandon Weakley. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Tony was born Oct. 26, 1928, to Alex F. and Helen E. (Sorensen) Koch, at Brooke Bottom. Before his marriage, he farmed with his dad until he entered the Service in 1951. After his discharge in 1953, he farmed with his brother until he married. He married Rita Wieseler Aug. 30, 1955, in St. Helena. They farmed south of St. James. In 1960, Tony had back surgery and as a result began working as a feed salesman for Walnut Grove Products and continued for 29 1/2 years. He attended grade school at Sts. Philip and James Catholic School, St. James, and then attended Wynot Public School as a freshman. He finished school and graduated from Trinity High School, Sioux City, Iowa, in 1946. He is a lifetime member of Wynot American Legion Post #31 and a veteran of the Korean War. In his parish, he served as an Eucharistic Minister, a Parish Council member of Sts. Philip and James Catholic Church and was very active in parish activities. He and his wife are Ministry of Praise members. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society, an Honorary Lifetime member of the FFA Organization and served on the election board for many years. His love for life and family was very evident, for he overcame many obstacles through his life. He will always be an inspiration and a special person who will be deeply missed by family and friends. Tony is the proud father and grandfather of six children and 23 grand- children. He is survived by his wife, Rita Koch; their children and spouses, Paul and Lori Koch, Hartington; Mark and Connie Koch, Laurel; Kevin and Dena Koch, Beardstown, Ill.; Karl and Michelle Koch, Hartington; Joe and Jean Martinez, Ft. Worth Texas; and Brad and JoEllen Sorenson, Newcastle; 23 grandchildren; four brothers, Cyril and Erwin, Wynot; Donald, Yankton, S.D.; and Raymond, Corning Calif.: three sisters, Sister Virgil Koch O.S.B., Yankton, S.D.; Delores LeClair, Sioux City, Iowa; and Irene Peitz, Orland, Calif.; and a cousin who lived with the Kochs, Marcia ( Wieseler) Green of Kentucky.
