Morten, Sr. one of the most highly respected and well beloved pioneers in this community passed away at Hot Springs, SD on Friday, August 23rd after several weeks illness. The late Mrs. Morten has been in poor health for some time, and she had been taken to Hot Springs, S.D., in the hope of benefiting her but his and every other efforts to save her life was futile and on the last Friday Surrounded by her husband and children, she passed quietly away. The cause of her death was leakage of the heart and other complications. Mrs. Jos. Morten, whose maiden name was Mary Wohlman, was born on Oct. 15, 1853, and grew to young womanhood in Wisconsin. When 19 years of age, she moved with her parents to Cedar county, Nebraska, and on Nov. 19, 1873 she was married to Joseph A. Morten. The young couple went to housekeeping at once on the old Morten homestead; and continued to live there until about five years ago, when they moved to Hartington. The late Mrs. Morten, was the mother of nine children, three daughters, Mrs. F.W. Barnhart and Misses Mae and Bird Morten of this city, and six sons, Steve, George, Ralph, Edward, Joseph, and Harry. The children all live in this county, except Harry the youngest, who is in the service, and all were present at the funeral. Mrs. Jos. A. Morten, Sr. was one of the finest and noblest Christian women who have ever lived, and her life was a constant inspiration to all those with whom she came in contact. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church from childhood, and was very active in the local church until it was merged into the First Congregational when she united with that organization. She was a loving wife, faithful and devoted mother, a loyal friend and a good neighbor, and her death will not be mourned by only the members of the immediate family, but also by the community at large, to which her death is a distinct loss. The funeral was held from the family residence, last Sunday afternoon at three o’clock, being conducted by Rev. H. Collier of Coleridge. The services were simple and impressive, and the house was thronged by friends who came to pay their last respects to the memory of a noble woman. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. Interment was made in the Hartington Cemetery.
