O. PICKERING DIES CHRISTMAS DAY - He Had Lived in Nebraska for More Than Forty-eight Years. Dr. Theo. O. Pickering, 72, died at Sholes on Christmas Day at the home of his son, R.E. Pickering. Theo. O. Pickering was born at Freeport, IL., Jan. 24, 1858, and grew to manhood in his native state and there studied veterinary medicine, and was later licensed to practice in Nebraska. He married Nancy Purman in Illinois, and with his bride came to Nebraska in 1880, living first near Ashland, where his wife died not long after. (other stories said a baby also died.) Mr. Pickering then took a homestead in Gosper County, near Elwood, and lived there some years. Here it was he was married in 1886 to Sylvia C. Hitchcock at Plum Creek, now Lexington. They moved to Banner County (near Dorrington where they resided about 3 years). They returned to Dawson County and purchased a farm near Elwood where he lived for seven years, then sold his farm and bought another near Eustis, where he farmed three years, and then moved to town (Eustis). His wife died in 1916. (After a few years he moved to Hastings, Nebraska where he resided until 1924). For the past six years, Mr. Pickering lived with his children (until the time of his death). Mr. Pickering had been in poor health for about four years. Deceased leaves four sons and four daughters, all living in Nebraska: O.W. Pickering of Lincoln, R.E. Pickering of Sholes, Mrs. Etta Anderson of Holbrook, C.R. Pickering of Magnet, Mrs. Essie Stark of Hastings, Mrs. Myrtle Brown of Elwood, Mrs. Ora Hess of Orafino, L. M. Pickering of Sholes. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at Brenner Funeral Parlor in Randolph, Nebraska on December 28, 1929. The service was conducted by Rev. E.W. Graham of the Presbyterian church in charge. Burial was made in the Randolph Cemetery.
