Porter was born in England Dec. 5, 1839 and passed away at his home in St. James Friday morning May 8, 1914, aged seventy four years, five months and three days. When a boy of fourteen years of age, he came to the United States with his parents, locating in Iowa County, Wisconsin. He enlisted as a soldier in the civil War in CO A Wisc. Regiment on the 6th day of February, 1865 and was honorably discharged on the 4th day of Sept. 1865. Mr. Porter was united in marriage to Clara C. Young March 5, 1861, to which five children were born, of which one died as a three month old infant. The balance still living are as follows; William and Mrs. Nettie Guild of Beach, ND, Mary Ernst of Hartington, NE, and Henry J. of Omaha. He was again united in marriage on Feb. 2, 1892, to Elvina Parks of Dixon Co. who survives him. With his family, Mr. Porter came to Cedar co. in the the spring of 1866, making the trip overland by team and wagon and locating at St. James where he resided continuously, until his death. He was one of the earliest settlers of this section and with them endured the privations and hardships of the pioneers. The funeral was held from the Methodist Church in this place last Sunday afternoon at two o clock, the funeral sermon being preached by the pastor Rev. J.J. Burke. Burial took place in the Bow Valley cemetery. The last sad rites were attended by one of the largest crowds ever assembled here on an occasion of this kind.
