Visitation was Oct. 11 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. Funeral services were Oct. 12, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, with Rev. Stan Schmidt officiating. Burial was in the Hartington Cemetery, Hartington. Pallbearers were Michael Ellis, Mark Ellis, Larry Leise, Jeff Sudbeck and Christopher Sudbeck. John was born May 15, 1959 to Leonard G. and Mary Ellen (Ward) Nieman in Deadwood, S.D. He grew up in Hartington and graduated from Cedar Catholic High School. He had various jobs in the Hartington area until he moved to Worthington, Minn., where he worked for Engle Trucking. He returned to Hartington several years ago. John loved to fish, bowl and play golf. He was active in Taekwondo. Survivors include his parents, Mary Promes, Yankton, S.D., and Richard Promes, Hartington; five sisters, Julie Sudbeck, Yankton, S.D.; Vicky Wiebersiek, Yankton, S.D.; Kathy and her husband, Andy Miller, Malcolm; Teresa and her husband, Troy Fisher, Hartington; Susan and her husband Greg McQuay, Magnet; and a brother, Michael Promes, and his wife, Yvonne, Omaha.
