JAMES FOR 58 YEARS William Rowell, 83, died Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm, following two years illness, due to the infirmities of old age, at his home in St. James where he had lived for 58 years. On May 25, he and Mrs. Rowell would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Mrs. Rowell was Josephine Barker before her marriage. Mr. Rowell was a civil war veteran having enlisted in the Illinois Infantry. For seven months during the war he served in Libby prison, famous after the war for the atrocities inflicted on northern soldiers. Mr. Rowell was in the butcher business for a number of years, later becoming a mason during which time he plastered many of the older homes in the county. Mr. Rowell was active in public affairs, and was on of the founders of the Peoples Party in the county, and most of his life he was identified with the democratic party in which he took an active interest tho not seeking public office. His kindliness and thoughtfulness made him a man whom everybody loved. Mr. Rowell had two step-sons, Tom Barker living near Hartington and M.G. Barker of Morrocco, Ind., who is here now. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm at the community ME Church of Wynot. Rev. Steiner officiating and burial will be in the Wynot cemetery. Cedar Co. News May 10, 1928. M.
