Schallert Sr. NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - William L. Schallert Sr., 78, North Hollywood, Calif., died Feb. 24, 2001, after a brief illness. Funeral services were Feb. 27 at Saint Charles Church, North Hollywood, Calif. A reception was held at the Beverly Garland/Holiday Inn in North Hollywood. His wife, Mary Rose, is a Hartington native and Holy Trinity graduate. He served in the Navy as a pharmacist's mate, tending the sick and wounded under fire, in the Pacific during World War II. He was a devout Catholic, lifelong Rotarian, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was the president of Schallert and Associates and later, Schallert Wine Company, a wine importing and distributing business. He was a pioneer in the California wine business and was the first in the U.S. to export California wine to Europe. He is survived by his wife, Mary Rose; his brothers, Patrick and John; daughters, Theresa, Patricia, Mary Anne, Catherine, Janet and Susie; sons, William Jr., Timothy, Thomas, Lawrence and Christopher; and 23 grandchildren.
