Schieffer PONCA - Peter J. Schieffer, Jr., 70, Ponca, died Jan. 19, 2001, at a Sioux City, Iowa, hospital, following a brief illness. Visitation was Jan. 22 at Mohr Funeral Home, Ponca. A Knights of Columbus Rosary and vigil service were held later that evening. Funeral services were Jan. 23 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Ponca, with Fr. James Bartak officiating. Burial was at the Obert Cemetery, Obert. Pallbearers were Mark Bohlsen, Rick Verzani, Jason Bowman, DelRay "Michael" Schieffer, Jim Neson and Brad Conrad. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Brady, Lynn Birkley, Ray Berger, Dudley Curry and Paul Stolpe. Peter was born Jan. 11, 1931, to Peter J. Schieffer, Sr. and Agatha M. (Uhing) Schieffer in rural Fordyce. He married Georgia V. Stolpe July 21, 1952, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Sioux City, Iowa. He served during the Korean Conflict era, from December 1952-December 1954. The couple started farming in 1955, east of Ponca. He was a farmer for 48 years in the Ponca area. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a Eucharistic Minister for twenty years, and a member of the Montana Thrashing Bee. He served on the Ponca Township Board for 16 years. He enjoyed restoring antique machinery and organizing thrashing bees. Survivors include his wife, Georgie V. Schieffer, Ponca; one son, Charles W. Schieffer, Ponca; one daughter and spouse, Carol and Dan Goochey, Council Bluffs, Iowa; one grandson, Jeremy J. Schieffer, Council Bluffs, Iowa; a godson and his wife, Eric J. Stolpe and Rheinola, Sioux City, Iowa; two grandchildren Megan and Georgie Sheets, Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters, Celestine and Robert Fisher, Boone, Iowa; and Carman Bohlsen, Omaha; two brothers, Fr. Stanley Schieffer, Red Cloud; and DelRay and Ruth Schieffer, Arvada, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Duane W. Schieffer.
