Schmidt MANKATO, Minn. - Irene M. Schmidt, 94, Mankato, Minn., died May 5, 2001, at Mankato Lutheran Home. Visitation was May 8 at the Landkamer Johnson Boman Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was May 9 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Mankato, with Rev. Kurt Farrell officiating. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. Irene was born March 12, 1907, to Theodore and May (Neuhalfen) Lechner in Nebraska City. She married Michael Schmidt April 20, 1927, in Paul. They moved to Mankato July 1952. A member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Irene enjoyed her family, needlework, crocheting and nature, especially flowers. Survivors include a son and his wife, Paul and Lois, Mankato, Minn.; six daughters, Mary Ann and Henry Schnider, Hugo, Minn.; Viola Baker, Rochester, Minn.; Velma and Joe Pieper, Palatine, Ill.; Dorothy and Jerry coopman, Mankato, Minn.; Irene E. "Cookie" Schmidt, Mankato, MInn.; and Susan and Farish Thompson, Afton, Wyo.; three brothers, Leonard Lechner, Fremont; Francis Lechner and his wife, Bernadette, Trenton, Ill.; and Kenny Lechner and his wife, Bea, Seneca, Kan.; four sisters, Lorene and her husband, Gilbert Hespen, Nebraska City; Marie Koppel, Nebraska City; Elsie Hicks, Omaha; and Evelyn Schmidt, Selma, Ala.; 50 grandchildren, 98 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; and three sons, Michael Jr., Leonard F. and Robert L. Memorials may be directed to Pro-Life Alliance or the American Cancer Society.
