The funeral was to have been held last Saturday afternoon but owing to the storm and snow blocked roads it had to be postponed. Rev. Will Richards of Hartington officiated at the service. Mrs. Wagner of Hartington sang two hymns accompanied by Mrs. Gosting. Burial was in the family lot in the Wynot cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral home. Pallbearers were Lloyd Jones, Willard Guy, Victor Nelson, Ray Nielsen, C.H. Newman and O.C. Decker. Merritt Smith was born October 4, 1871 at Jefferson, SD., the son of John and Phoebe McCabes Smith. He spent his early life in that vicinity until he was 23 years of age then went to Iowa where he lived north of Sioux City for about seven years. Coming to Cedar county in 1902 he farmed east of here and later bought a farm and built a modern home adjoining town. He has been engaged in farming all of his life. He never married but he and his sisters lived together in their home. He has been a resident of this vicinity for 46 years. Mr. Smith was apparently feeling as good as usual up until Tuesday morning of last week when he had a sudden heart attack and lived but 24 hours. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Viola Reid and Miss Addie Smith of Wynot and one brother, Morten smith, of Morris, Minn. Also five nephews, George Bowder, Wynot; Guy Bowder, Chicago; Marvin Gordon and Wayne Smith all of Minn.; and three nieces, Mrs. Arletta Jensen, and Mrs. Grace Hart both of California and Mrs. Addie Hayes of Rapid City. MERRITT SMITH 77, DIES WEDNESDAY AT WYNOT, ILL 24 HOURS Wynot - Merritt smith, 77, retired farmer living in Wynot died Wednesday morning after an illness of 24 hours. Death was due to a heart attack. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Methodist Church in Wynot with Rev. Robert Strobel officiating. Jones Funeral Home in Hartington is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Smith is survived by two sisters and one brother.
