This grim reaper gives no through as to whether or not its victim is ready but sweeps its harvest into eternity, where the chaff and the grain are separated. Bless is the man that is found ready and watching. August Peter Strenzke. August Strenzke was born in Prussia, Germany, Sept. 22, 1827. At the age of 28 he left his native clime and came to America in 1855, to establish a home and fortune in the new world. He came almost immediately after landing to Pririe du Chien, Wisconsin, where he remained until 1876, when he came with his family to Cedar County. Here he has made his homestead until some years ago when he retired and his residence has since been in St. James. Mr. Strenzke was married to Teresia Riif at Prairie du Chien on May 30, 1857. To this union was born eight children, five of whom are still living and all grown to maturity as follows: Emma Sternzke and Edith Klopping of this place, Albertina Strenzke and Mrs. L. C. Nissen of Vermillion, SD., and Theodore Strenzke of Los Angeles, Calif. There are also three grandchildren. August Strenzke passed away at his home in St. James at about seven o’clock, Saturday evening, January 6, 1912, the principal cause of death being old age. He had been in poor health since Thanksgiving time but no serious results were feared as he was sitting up and about the house most of the time. On Saturday evening he went tothe table and ate supper and shortly afterward complained of being tired and upon being found in bed quietly passed away to the mysterious beyond. The machinery had simply worn out and the slender thread snapped asunder. His death was a shock to the community. Each and everyone who knew him felt that they had lost a dear friend. Seldom has it been our privilege to know a man of such noble, sturdy and kindly character. He was always on the sunny side of life, and to meet him and grasp his hand and encounter his friendly greeting, made one feel that his presence made life pleasanter and brighter. He leaves to mourn his loss, his aged widow who has been his faithful partner and helpmate in joy and sorrow for almost fifty-five years, and the five children who have the deep sympathy of the hundreds of friends in Cedar county. Mr. Strenzke was a member from boyhood of the Lutheran church, but as there is no Lutheran Minister here, the funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Romick from the home. The funeral will be held from the home at one o’clock tomorrow.
