Visitation was held Sept. 20 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a wake service held later that evening. Hitchcock Funeral Home, Burwell, was in charge of arrangements. Funeral services were Sept. 21 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Burwell, with Rev. Fr. Bernard Berger officiating. Burial was in the Cottonwood Cemetery, Burwell. Alma was born Oct. 6, 1916, to Frank and Anna (Schroeder) Pinkelman near St. James in Cedar County. She attended school at St. Phillip and James Catholic School, Cedar County. Alma married Melvin Thoene June 1, 1943, at St. James Catholic Church, St. James. They farmed and ranched in the Wynot area until 1959 when they moved their family to a ranch located eight miles east of Burwell. Melvin and Alma retired and moved to the Park View Plaza, Burwell, in 1998. Alma moved to the Community Memorial Health Center in November 2000, and Melvin moved to the assisted living there in May 2001. Alma was actively involved with the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its Altar Society, was a long standing member of the Midvale Ladies Social Club, and was kept busy with her sons 4-H activities as they were growing up. Alma was a homemaker all her life, and loved raising flowers and vegetables. She is survived by her husband, Melvin, Burwell; six sons, Cy and Marilyn Thoene, Ansley; Roger Thoene, Burwell; Gene Thoene, Ainsworth; Charlie and Verda Thoene, Fred and Sue Thoene, and Hank and Marci Thoene, all of Burwell; thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one brother, Urban Pinkelman, Wynot; and one sister, Cecilia Pinkelman, Yankton, S.D. Alma was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Fritz, Lawrence, Frank and Al Pinkelman; and two sisters, Emma Pinkelman and Sister Mary James.
