Thompson (PHOTO) HARTINGTON - Bessie L. Thompson, 85, died April 6, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare, Hartington. Visitation was April 9 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. Services were April 10 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hartington, with Rev. Paul Reimers officiating. Burial was in Wynot City Cemetery, Wynot. Pallbearers were Neil Pedersen, Wes Campbell, Marvin DeBlauw, Ron Lauer, Cecil Andresen, John Nelson, Jim Nelson and Gene Nelson. Bessie was born Oct. 9, 1915, to Julius and Sena (Ellingson) Nelson in Newcastle. She married Chris Thompson Sept. 1, 1938, in Maskell. He died Jan. 29, 1993. Bessie grew up between Newcastle and Maskell. She was a 1931 graduate of Newcastle High School. Prior to her marriage, she operated a beauty shop in Wynot. After her marriage, she and her husband farmed southwest of Wynot. In 1991, they moved to Hartington where Bessie helped at Future Promise. She was a former member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Wynot, and Faith Lutheran Church, Maskell, and is a member of Trinity Luthern Church, Hartington, the Cedar County Historical Society and the Lutheran Brotherhood. Survivors include three children, Crystal and Don Merchen, Petersburg; Leon and Karen Thompson, Norfolk; Byron and Laura Thomspon, Hartington; a brother and wife, Harry and Mildred Nelson, Linn Grove, Iowa; a sister and husband, Ruth and Vern Smith, Ontario, Ore. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Clifford Nelson and Milton Orlando Nelson; six sisters, Mildred Olson, Selma Shanahan, Olga McCracken, Ida Nelson, Lois Craham and Margaret Nelson.
