Mrs. J.C. VanCampen, probably better known as Mrs. W.G. Smith to old residents of this community, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. I.H. Warner, near Wynot, at the age of 74 years, four months and fifteen days. Direct cause of the death was due to cancer. Mrs. VanCampen had been ailing for a long time, and had undergone several operations in the past year, but all to no avail. Her death, although not unexpected is a matter of sorrow to their relatives and old friends in this vicinity. Mary Rebecca Cross was born January 28th, 1853 at DeSoto, Vernon or Crawford Co. Wisconsin, and came with her parents to Nebraska when a small child. On January 1, 1869 she was united in marriage to Ellison Cook to which union were born children; Levi Cook of Lester, WV., and John Cook of Huntington, WV. On July 3, 1871 she was married to Wiliam Smith at Sioux City, IA. To this union were born six children: Mrs. Kate Snowe of Wynot, George Smith of Powers Lake, ND, Mrs. Jennie Warnock of Wynot, Mrs. Mae Ann Warner of Wynot, William H. Smith of Forest City, SD and Reuben S. Smith of Gettesburg, SD. Mr. Smith died in 1912. In 1917 she married J.C. VanCampen of Hot Springs SD. He died in 1919. Besides the children, Mrs. VanCampen leaves to mourn her loss, forty-two grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Burial services were held at 3:00 pm yesterday, (Wednesday) at the Lutheran Church, of which she was a member. Rev. E.L. Bentson, officiating. Burial will be in Wynot City Cemetery. The children have the sympathy of the entire community in their great sorrow.
