She attended District School #6 a mile from her home. In 1924 she enrolled in Mount Marty Academy. She graduated in 1928 and attended summer school in Aberdeen and qualified for a third grade teaching certificate. Her long ministry in education began in 1928 in a seven-pupil rural school in Grindstone, S.D. After a year of teaching she enrolled in St. Teresa's College in Winona, Minn., where she earned a bachelor's degree with majors in history and German. After graduating in 1933 she taught for two years in District School #26 in Hartington. She entered Sacred Heart Monastery in 1935 and made first Profession in June 1937, receiving the name Roswitha. She served as foreign student advisor for three years, was involved in tutoring, volunteering at Sister James Nursing Home and helping with Birthright Hotline. She served as secretary to the monastery council for many years and as board member for Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Avera Sacred Heart and St. Michael's Hospital. In 1987, the Midwest District of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education selected her the eight-state Volunteer of the Year. She received the college's Distinguished Service to Mount Marty award the previous June. She is survived by her Benedictine sisters, several nieces and nephews, a host of friends of the Mount Marty Alumni Association and all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents and 11 brothers and sisters. Memorials may be designated to the Sister Roswitha Zavadil Scholarship at Mount Marty College.
