Sheriff Dahlman, to whom had been telegraphed a description of Hughes, captured his man about twenty miles from Chadron, last Wednesday. Hughes at the time was headed for the Sioux reservation. In a conversation yesterday the prisoner did not deny that he did the cutting, but stated that it had been done in self defense, and was forced upon him. After cutting VanGilder he walked to Hermosa, stayed there over night and then started down the road. He was on foot, and had walked to where he was captured. He is now behind the bars in the county jail, and as soon as Van Gilder's wounds will permit will have his preliminary hearing.
